Events 1992

EVENTS 1992 A period marked by Director-General Gyula Rózsa, came to an end last year. Since November 1, 1992, dr. Zsuzsa Lovag, as the winner of the competition invited by the Ministry of Culture and Education, took over the management of the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts. The new Director-General graduated in 1966 from the Faculty of Arts of ELTE University of Budapest, with archeology and history as majors. First she was assistant, from 1986 Manager of the Medieval Department of the Hungarian National Museum. She published several books and plenty of studies on Medieval goldsmith's art. The most significant exhibition of the previous year was the last display of a comprehensive series Periods in European Decorative Art. Opened by Béla Németh G. on May 8, the REVIVAL STYLES IN THE 19TH CENTURY - HISTORICISM AND ECLECTICISM introduced about six hundred objects, organised by Ferenc Batári and Erzsébet Vadászi. The important groups of objects are described for the public in brochures; the catalogue with the thorough and illustrated analysis of the entire material is to be printed soon. Two smaller events also have to be mentioned: the GOLDSMITH'S WORKS FROM NUREMBERG (15TH-19TH CENTURY) was opened on October 16 by art historian János Végh. It was an exhibition of referring pieces of the Museum's collection. The catalogue was written by the two organisers, Éva Békési and András Szilágyi. A new exhibition series was launched in the Ferenc Hopp Museum, entitled Rarities and Oddities From the Collection of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Eastern-Asiatic Art. (Each "chamber" exhibition is devoted to a single piece or a small group of objects.) The first of the series, NEW ACQUISITIONS IN THE MONGOL COLLECTION was opened on December 1, introducing various statues, pictures and other ecclesiastical objects arranged as a Lam a ist Buddhist home altar. The Museum hosted two interesting guest exhibitions in 1992: the 88 FANS was open from September 4 to October 18, presenting contemporary international material of the Galerie Philharmonie of Liege. (The organizer was Aliz Torday.) From November 21 the public could visit the EMANATIONS, which introduced Viennese jewellery art, selecting the most beautiful pieces made between 1936 and 1991 from the collection of the Viennese Arts College; the exhibition was organized by Erika Patka and Piroska Acs.
