HORVÁTH Hilda: Marcel Jean textiltervei a Francia-Magyar Pamutipar RT számára

36. KRTF 2257 18.7x15.5 cm p.ink marked 37. KRTF 2419/10 11.8x11 cm p.ink marked The sketches are covered with a twined mess of small, identical, stylised leaves, shown from the top. These pieces are still connected with the other floral patterns, though their style, die reduced application of colours (in one of them, the shrill contrast of black and white is softened by cold or cool blue (KRTF 2176), while the others are dominated by the sham opposition of these colours), as well as the geometrical motifs point towards the two-dimensional method of illustration. However, traces of shading and modelling can still be detected (KRTF 2419/10). 38. Imaginary floral ornament 38. KRTF 2260 17.7x16.3 cm p.ink, white cover paint marked The plane, fern-like ornaments are results of a daring imagination; die coiling, leafy plants arc arranged in a systematic line beside each other on the sketch. The wish to create new, astonishing compositions and unusual motifs is part of the creative freedom of the surrealist artist. 39-48. Geometrical compositions 39. KRTF 2175 10x10.5 cm p.tempera, white cover paint marked 40. KRTF 2251 12.7x11.6 cm p.ink marked 41. KRFT 2253 12.3x12 cm p.ink marked 42. KRTF 2254 13.3x13 cm p.ink marked 43. KRTF 2255 16.5x16.5 cm p.ink marked 44. KRTF 2256 16.5x16.8 cm p.ink marked 45. KRTF 2258 13x12 cm p.ink 46. KRTF 2259 19.5x19.5 cm p.ink marked marked 47. KRTF 2419/9 14.2x13.8 cm p.tempera, ink unmarked 48. KRTF 2419/11 11x11 cm p.tempera, ink marked The geometrical compositions are dominated by the playful application of die lightest and darkest colours, the contrast of white and black; only few of die pieces contain more colours. The patterns are characterised by the two-dimensional way of illustration, although in places there are traces of shading on the surface of regular and irregular figures. The lines, figures and imaginary patterns are placed in different positions, creating an abstrct, systematically composed rhythm: they are either scattered, or arranged in diagonal or vertical lines. The simple but varied range of geometrical motifs create an endless row of patterns in all of die pictures. 49-50. Geometrical and floral ornaments used in the same composition 49. KRTF 2202 20.7x19.5 cm p.ink, tempera marked 50. KRTF 2252 12.2x12.1 cm p.ink marked Geometrical elements and flower motifs are scarcely mingled in one drawing. When diey are, however, the geometrical ornaments appear in the background or as a framework around the flowers both in a brightly coloured or in a black-and-white composition. Marcel Jean plays freely with shapes, ahd the structure of his pictures never lacks rhythm.
