Embroidered carpet Upper Hungary 1859 Made with cross-stitches on congress can­vas base, coloured embroidery in wool, 450 x 270 cm The embroidery, consisting of 24 pictures, was made with the help of specimen sheets and presents the characteristic Biedermeier subjects of the age, e.g. a romantic field-like garden, bunches of flowers, etc. In its bot­tom right-hand corner an inscription can be seen : "Zrobity Ludmilla i Aniela Romer 1839". Its border is a wreath of vine leaves hemmed with ribbon. Purchased from Joseph Brey. Inv. No. 88.118.1 48. Damask tablecloth Sepsiszentgyörgy, c. 1880 White flax damask, 140 x 140 cm The pattern edged with red silk is set on white background. Its ornamentation, consisting of eclectic spiral/helical leaves and stylized geometric motifs, is typical of the period. Its special weaving technique is reminiscent of Renaissance Holbein em­broidery. Purchased from Mrs. László Huszka. Inv. No. 88.145.1 49. Tablecloth Austrian, c. 1880 White pique, 304 x 250 cm In the middle appears a Jugendstil pattern consisting of pansies and wild roses. In the border there are small stylized rosettes. On one of its narrower sides, the tablecloth bears the maker's mark: PATENT N°. 2196/A. D. 1881 and bobbin lace. The piece originates from the castle of Kis­magyari (next to Pozsony, now Bratislava). Purchased from László Besey. Inv. No. 88.76.1 50. Embroidered specimen handkerchief Hungarian, 1882 White batiste embroidered with white flax yarn, 24 x 26 cm Made with madeira and Hungarian point. Its decoration includes borders of four types, flowery corner ornamentation and monograms. Below in the middle one sees mention of the year 1882. Purchased from Mrs. Madaras Marcella Kecseti. Inv. No. 88.127.1 51. Tablecloth Hungarian, 20th century Hand-knitted from white hemp-thread, 204 x 154 cm Divided into squares, bordered with dense rows of knots. In the divisions there are squares. All around one can see a pierced pattern consisting of three-pointed leaves between pairs of stars. Presented by Mrs. László Kunszt. Inv. No. 88.158.1 52. Parasol Hungarian, c. 1870 Diameter 56 cm, 1. 64 cm Golden silk woven in patterns accom­panied by arched rows of roses in harmony with the flowers on the stick and framed with taffeta ribbon. On its carved stick, which is made of bone, there are leafy and budding rose sprigs between volutes. The handle is ornamented with flowers. Purchased from Mrs. Sándor Vályi. Inv. No. 88.412.1 53. Tapestry. "Torn Apart" By Klára Cságoly, 1972 Natural wool, 219 x 320 cm Rectangular in shape, composed of two pieces. On the surface there is a pattern in relief containing two "comb"-like motifs facing each other. In the bottom right cor­ner the monogram "CS" appears. Purchased from Mrs. Károly Aliquander. Inv.
