12. TUNG-FANG SHUO 13. DUTCHMAN WITH A MONKEY Analyzing the composition of a Toumu figure, the ability of the Chinese master to create varied forms out of a few standard elements becomes apparent. One of the two gods of stars, Tungfang Shuo is depicted in our next blanc de Chine figure (Inv.-Nr: 5364, fig. 12). Originally he was a historic personality, a courtier of Wu, emperor of the Han dynasty, a famous joker. Once he sneaked into the garden of the Western Princess Mother, and stole some of the peaches of longevity. Mostly he is represented while escaping with a branch of peach on his shoulder.
