TAJTI, T. Zs. — TÓTH, T.: Data to the Anthropology of the Avar Period Population of the South-eastern Transdanubia Authors carried out a detailed analysis of the anthropological finds excavated by László Papp at Boly (Vlth —VITIth century) and at Nagyharsány (Vllth century) belonging to the Avar period. Authors are aware of the fact that while evaluating the finds demographically, anthropologically and ethnogenetically their work is incomplete since only a part of the cemetery' s population has been treated. Out of the 53 skulls (Boly) and 62 skulls (Nagyharsány) only 8 and 6 adults, respectively were suitable for detailed analysis. These measurements revealed that anthropologically the adult skulls represent dominant Europoid features. Three morphological complexes have been identified for each of the populations. For Boly the dolichocran-metriocran-mesoprosop-mesen complex with Mediterranean race elements, the mesocran-tapeinocran-mesoprosop-mesen complex with proto-Europoid elements (Cró-magnon), and the brachycran-metriocran-mesoprosop-mesen complex with Europid-brachycran type elements. For Nagyharsány the population may be characterized by the Mediterranean-protoEuropoid and the Alp type elements. As far as applied topography is concerned the Boly male group stands close on the basis of secondary features to Előszállás, Bágyog-Gyürhegy and Környe series, on the basis of primary-feature s to Környe, Csákberény and Szebény series. The Nagyharsány male group comes close principally to Kékesd, Szebény and Előszállás series. The Boly and Nagyharsány female groups in several cases are much closer to our home Sarmatian and Roman-period finds, than to any Avar-period series unearthed in the Transdanubia.
