(MÖSCHEN 1894), Pompeii (SCHMIDT 1884), Varna (HAJNIS 1965), Kistria (NICOLAESCU-PLOPSOR 1969), Budesti and Malaesti (VELIKANOVA 1961). In order to trace the eventual basic population of the Pécs series from the La-Tene period, I managed to draw only three combined series of the same time into the comparison: Hungarian material (NEMESKÉR IDEÁK 1954, HANKÓ-KISZELY 1967), South Slovakian material (VLCEK 1957), Swiss - South German material (HUG 1940).Por information I have drawn into the comparison also the only published, relatively "large" Sarmatian series of Hungary: Hódmezővásárhely-Fehértó (BARTUCZ 1961), further a South German "reihengräber " group: the combination of Sondheim, München-Giesing, South German and Regensburg "reihengräber" series (CREEL 1966). Distance analysis has been made with the method of PENROSE. The calculations were based on the following 10 cranial measurements: maximum cranial length (l), maximum cranial breadth (8), minimum frontal breadth (9), basi-bregmatic height (17), bizygomatic breadth (45), upper facial height (48), orbital breadth (51), orbital height (52), nasal breadth (54), nasal height (55). In the Swiss - South German material from the La-Tene period I have supplied the missing measurement 51 with the basi-nasal length (5),in order to have ten characters; in the case of men, however, the lack of the nasal breadth makes the number of calculable characters only 9. In the Roman female series from Switzerland and South Germany I have supplied the missing measurement 51 with measurement 5 equally. Results. (Table 10.) The male series of Pécs shows analogies to the finds of Rome from the fourth century, those of Histria from the fourth to sixth centuries and those of Baranya county from the fourth century, according to tie calculations. This similarity is, however, insufficient to establish the immediate, genetic relation between the mentioned series and Pécs, es-
