BOTTYÁN, L. 0. An Anthropological Assessment of the X-XII. Century Cemetery at Mosonmagyaróvár The Árpád Age cemetery (X—XII. c. A. D.) at Mosonmagyaróvár lies in the Northern Transdanubia. Of the available osteological material of 48 graves, only 31 could be studied to some extent. The preservation of the skeletal remains is therefore medium (Table 1). Table 2 contains sex and age data. Methods applied in the elaboration of the material are given in the literature references. Owing to the small extent of the osteous material, only mean values have been calculated (Table 3). On the basis of the classificatory distribution of the measurements and indices (Table 4) as well as the descriptive characteristics (Table 5), the general characterization of the material is as follows: Male series: meso-dolichocranial skulls, medium developed glabellar region, oblong orbita; Female series: dolichocranial skulls, smooth glabellar region, rounded orbita. Both series are characterized by a narrow low upper face and a slightly convex nasal ridge. Anatomical variations occur only sporadically. The rate of sexual dimorphism fluctuates about the average values (Table 6). On the primary taxonomical basis the material is apparently homogeneous, containing only Europoid racial elements. On the secondary taxonomical basis, however, it seems to be strongly heterogeneous, yet allowing a subdivision into two groups: group I comprises dolichocranial skulls with the possibility of the presence of a rather gracile (gracile Mediterranean) and a more massive (Cromagnoid A) subgroup; while group II contains mesobrachycranial skulls. A comparatively pure type in this group seems to be represented by merely two skulls with Cromagnoid B elements. The skeletal bones of the series are generally gracile, the stature small medium. Concerning asymmetry, the right humeri and femora are slightly more robust and longer than the left ones. (Table 7.) 24
