lected dermatoglyphic and pigmentation data from more than a thousand schoolchildren, in several settlements of the country. A.Thoma made thorough analyses on the problems of anthropogenesis. It should be noted, however, that the majority of treatises published by our research workers refer to investigations concerning the finds originating from various socio-historical periods. These appeared in our home anthropological and archeological, in central and county, and in Academic, University and Museum publications (Farkas Gy.-Dezső Gy.1965, Farkas Gy. 1966, 1968, 1969), but only those communicated through the journals of the Natural History Museum (Annales)and our Department (Crania-Anthropologia Hungarica) will be listed below. Beyond the traditional working up of the osteological series, the staff made special analyses on I5OO skeletons of 70 localities (palatum, os malare: 0. Bottyán, T. Tóth). By the analysis of the facial flatness, involving more than a thousand crania originating from 55 localities of the Avar Period, an attempt was made for the elucidation of ethnogenetic problems and connections in the Sarmatian Epoch, by the examination of the differential-diagnostically important taxonomic characteristics (Tóth, 1970b). Instigated by the earlier investigations (1958-1963) of the present author (Tóth, 1963), his colleagues turned with increased attention to the anthropological problems of the Sarmatian - Roman Epochs. In assessing our activities during the twenty-five years, it should be kept in mind that the investigations centered on three main themes. J. Nemeskéri initiated the application of the biological reconstruction of human populations, including also the finds originating from various historical periods. He paid special attention to the need of analysing sexual expressedness, age and life span. The present author urged the elaboration and analysis of the anthropological problems of ethnogenesis and the morphophysiological aspects of variability by age. These two themes found increasing emphasis since 1965. Concerning the anthropological problems of ethnogenesis ,the author
