For years he was a lea­ding officer of the United Electrical Workers Union. He fought the House Un-American Committee and carried his case to the Supreme Court which decided in his favor. It was a historical decision. In the letter below he discloses a little-known but intense­ly dramatic detail of American political history.) I promised to tell you how Truman made it. I was invited by labor friends to the Demo Party convention in 1944 despite my being a Republican. In Indiana, the Dem.Party was still under the influence of the Ku Klux Klan and violently anti­labor. A Teamster friend and I orgnized the Republican Labor Club, of which I was secretary for 12 years. In cities where we had members, no cops ever cracked heads on a picket line. We had the support of top politicians and helped save Sen. Cape- hart's re-election. Ironically that district is the same that saw Dan Quayle make his political start decades later. I was given a Demo convention badge because the permanent chairman, Sam Jackson (U.S. Senator) was a friend. I served as runner between the labor people and the chair. Labor's aim was to win the v.p. nomination for Henry A. Wallace amid pressures on Roosevelt to drop him. When that item came up on the second evening, and Wallace's name was mentioned, there was a demonstration never seen in conventions before. Seas of "We Want Wallace" signs flooded the convention floor and galleries. Jackson could not gavel it down. After an hour I called the Wallace headquarters in a nearby hotel and suggested he appear now. His manager said they would wait until his name was placed in nomination. (It was a tragic historical error.) When labor got word Wallace was not coming, the demonstrations eased up. Jack- son said the convention was running behind schedule so he would entertain a motion to postpone v.p. nomination until the next day. The roof shook with "no" but he called for a vote to postpone. At that time I was up in the gallery where we could see the entire floor. The hand-raising vote to post­pone was not quite 10%, and the votes against were at least 90%. Jackson rapped his gavel and announced the motion to postpone had passed. The smoke-filled room at some Chicago Hotel settled on Harry Truman. In about li years FDR died, Truman was in and got us into the Korean War. History was changed at Chicago that night. I want also to explain how Sen. Capehart, a friend of labor was saved. The McCarthy­ite, Alex Campbell, spent two years in the attorney general's office hunting reds... like claiming he got the fourth decision to deport Harry Bridges, etc. All the media predicted Capehart's defeat. Campbell issued a mailer claiming to be a friend of labor but we knew differently as he was partner in the largest anti-labor firm. We dug up a case he won, where a widow whose husband was killed on the Pennsy R.R. got not a penny. Adding two similar cases, I got Capehart's committee to print half a million copies of a labor statement; we delivered bundles to all plants. Campbell, the Hoosier McCarthyite, was defeated.
