You are safer from crime in Hungary than you are in Italy or Turkey, although not so safe as you are in Scandinavia. Even so, the police advice to visitors from abroad is: "Wotchit!" During the tourist season some 2-3% of crime is committed against tourists. Theft, car theft, assault and robbery head the list. The black spots are Lake Balaton and other resort areas, and almost all the crimes involve property. Here are some don'ts if you want to leave Hungary uncheated, unrobbed and unassaulted. Don't use late-night bars and discos as places to make new friends. Although no tourist has been murdered in the last couple of years, several have been robbed or as­saulted, and very often the crime followed a casual acquaintance made at night. Pros­titutes are sometimes used as decoys. Don't, in particular, fail to be on your guard if you are invited round for a late- night drink "at our place" by a mixed group of young people. Teams working the tourist spots often pretend to be drunker than you. They aren't, but it's a sobering expe­rience to find your wallet is gone, even if you escape without a bruise on the back of the head. Don't change money on the black market. There are gangs who specialize in counting wads of notes in confusing ways. Others like to cry "police", in the middle of the transaction and make off with both bunches of currency. Don't, particularly if you are elderly, wear the family jewels round your neck. Juvenile criminals go in for yanking them off and running. Don't forget that a small minority of taxi drivers are crooked. Always insist the meter is switched on, and pay in Hunga­rian currency. If in doubt, pay, but take the number of the taxi. Hotel staff or the police will help you to decide if you have been cheated and file a complaint. Don't buy art objects from unlicensed traders. They may be fakes, and if they are genuinely valuable, and old, you won't have received the required permit to take them out of the country. To the Editor RENO, Nev. It is a hot Summer here and the river is a trickle. Due to the elevation, at 5m feet, it does cool off nights. My wife, Ruth has .large rose and other flowerbeds and that is work. People passing often compliment and some cars stop and take photos. I tell them it is Ruth's work. Daughter of a Lutheran minister, with a whole block next to the main street in Defiance, Ohio, church, school, gym, etc. her mother planted flowers everywhere. My only contribution was the Truman touch. They always ask what that was. When Harry and Bess moved into the White House, in 1945, the rose garden was a shambles. Bess, a rose fancier, had it spiffed up to its present beauty; where the famous are shown and photographed. One day a lady friend of Bess was visiting from Missou­ri. Harry was walking up ahead.
