8. Thursday, March 19. 1992. AMERIKAI MAGYAR SZO 104 ß Revolutionary Scenes in Budapest. This month Hungarians throughout the world celebrate the 144th anniversary of the revolution of 1848. A series of revolutions swept through Europe at that time, revolutions that were aimed at the liquidation of feudalism. In Hungary Sándor Petőfi, Hungary's greatest poet mobilized the youth and indeed the entire nation, while Kossuth, the statesman organized the constitutional transition to democracy, and gained the consent of the emperor of Austria to the changes. The contemporary illustrations show three dramatic moments of the historic events. It was at the National Museum where according to some reports Petőfi recited his rousing poem: "Arise Hungarians" that electrified the country and eventually propared it for war.
