8. Thursday, Oct. 10. 1991. ORVOS A CSALÁDBAN A gégerákról A gégerák előfordulása az utolsó 20 évben gyakoribbá vált. Százezer emberből évente négy betegszik meg. A nők köreben mindjob­ban elterjedő dohányzás jelentős szerepet játszik ebben a folyamatban, bár az arány 2:1, még mindig a nők ritkább megbetegedé­séről tanúskodik. RIZIKÓFAKTOROK Ä gégerák legismertebb kiváltó okai a következők: dohányzás, alkoholfogyasztás, munkahelyi levegőszennyezettség, rendsze­resen visszatérő gyulladásos folyamatok. Ha a tényezők közül egy személyre több is hat, a megbetegedés valószínűsége növek­szik. KORAI FELISMERÉS A legfontosabb vizsgálati módszer a gégetukrözes, esetleg egy célzott szövettani mintavétellel egybekötve. Azoknál, akiket egynél több rizikófaktor veszélyeztet, ezt az eljárást 40 éves kor felett évente egyszer el kell végezni. FIGYELMEZTETŐ JELEK A jó kezelési eredmények legfontosabb előfeltétele a korai felismerés. Szimptomák, jelek:- két-három hétnél hosszabb ideig tartó rekedtség.- a hangszin megváltozása- nyelési vagy krákogási inger- krónikusan visszatérő köhögés- tisztázatlan eredetű torokfájás- nyaki nyirokmirigyek duzzanata DIAGNÓZIS A gégerák diagnózisát az orr-fül-gégész szakorvos allitja fel gégetükrözés és a gégetükrözés alkalmával vett szövettani minta mikroszkópos vizsgálatának segít­ségével. KEZELÉS A szervmegtartó sebészi beavatkozásnak, illetve a sugárkezelésnek legjobb előfeltétele a korai felismerés. Abban az esetben, ha a gégerák elterjedése egy bizonyos mértéket meghaladott, a szakemberek a gege teljes eltávolításával - általában sugárkezelessel egybekötve - kísérlik meg a gyógyítást. Mindaddig, mig a tumor sebészeti beavatko­zással radikálisan eltávolítható, van remény a gyógyulásra. *** Olaszországban új akcióba kezdtek. Fel akarják mérni a csontritkulás elterjedtségét. Ezért lehetővé tették, hogy a 45 évnél idősebb nők speciális felszereltségu közpon­tokban jelentkezzenek vizsgálatra. A vizs­gálat laboratóriumi elemzésből, röntgene- zésbol és a csont sűrűségének méréséből all. Ennek az akciónak az a célja, hogy megállapítsák a kockázati tényezőket, és megfelelő lépéseket tegyenek a csontrit­kulás ellen. "The only reason we got here this time was because of the . United Auto Workers Union. As far as coming to Washington on a vacation, I don't think so." Sherry has given up vacations and lots of other things since her husband, Dick went on strike 15 months ago at the U.S. Graphite Plant in Saginaw, Michigan. They are two of at least 250.000 unionists who swarmed through Washington in the AFL-CIO's Solidarity Day II.march on Labor Day. For a brief moment they were invigorated. Then they boarded the bus back to Saginaw, back to a harsh reality in which unions, as they celebrate Labor Day, are fighting for their lives. U.S. Graphite is in Saginaw's gritty east end. It is 100 years old. It makes bearings and seals used in jet engines. The company had financial difficulty, filing for bankruptcy in 1982. In 1984 the workers agreed to a $2.- per hour wage cut, cut in holidays, and vacations and the elimination of the pension plan. But last year, they refused a wage freeze and a dismantling of seniority and job classifications and they balked at paying all health-care increases of more than 8 percent. Before they walked out in June 1990, they never considered the possibility of being replaced permanently.. They were replaced within days by 98 newly hired workers. They gather at the union hall every Tuesday to hear reports and collect occasional handouts of government surplus canned goods. The UAW pays their health insurance and $100 per week as long as the strike lasts. The strikers found most of the speeches in Washington boring, but they like Jim Hightower, the former Texas agricultural commissioner who pointed to the US Capitol and said, "It is time to get the hogs out of the creek." They never forgot what was waiting for them at home. Michael Butler, the company's president has allowed 16 selected strikers to return to work. But he is blunt about his loyalties. "The replacements kept that company going when we needed it most" - he told a newspaper. " I never forget anyone who does me a favor. Ever." The replacement workers who are machine operators now earn $10 per hour, 75 cents per hour more than the people they replaced. For now, the dispute is languishing at the National Labor Relations Board. The union hopes for a ruling that the strike was caused by unfair labor practices. After such a ruling, the board could order U.S. Graphie to fire the replacement workers and pay the strikers all back wages. Hearing is scheduled soon. In preliminary complaint, the Board alleged that the company was unfair when it failed to make scheduled payments into the workers savings plan, fired workers even though their strike, because it concerned wages and benefits, was legal. Bill Weeden, the union's top bargainer at U.S. Graphite said an unfavorable ruling could cost the company millions of dollars and could force it to bargain on the union's terms. He has mixed feelings, despite his pride at seeing Washington for the first time; he believes the country's political and economic system is working against U.S. workers.
