7 TO OUR READERS Dear Friend. With this issue of the Amerikai Magyar Szó, we resume publication of a monthly English language supplement, under the name of Hungarian Mercury. This name honors the memory of the first periodical ever published in Hungary - a Latin language publication called "Mercurius Veridicus Ex Hungária" (Messenger of Truth from Hungary) - which served the glorious struggle for Hungarian freedom and independence under the leadership of Prince Ferenc Rákóczi in the early 18th century (1705). It is in the spirit of that early forerunner, enriched by the cultural and social advances of our own age, that we intend to edit the Hungarian Mercury. MERCURIUS VERIDICUS EX HUNGÁRIA. A Magyar Hírmondó, Our endeavour, we fully realize, is experimental. Its success depends on the enthusiastic participation of the readers of the Amerikai Magyar Szo, particularly those who read the English language press as well. We will count on their input in the form of letters, suggestions, interesting and relevant clippings, etc. The readers of the Magyar Szó will, of course, receive the English language supplement each month as a regular part of their subscription at no additional cost. However, our aim is to broaden our readership beyond its current range. For an annual subscription fee of $ 6.-twelve issues of the Hungarian Mercury will be sent to any address in the U.S.A. We need your help. Please let us hear from you. Use the coupon below for your comments and/or contribution. CONFERENCE ON HUNGARIANS Scientists gathered in Budapest at the beginning of August for a conference on the position of Hungarians abroad. The conference was on Hungarian diaspora, the first event organized with the assistance of the Hungarian Forum set up by the World Federation of Hungarians. Dr. Zoltán Szabó, a retired government minister said the Forum was designed to enhance ties among Hungarian members of the intelligentsia around the world and in Hungary, to encourage events in particular specialist fields. Professional ties were a useful complement to ties of language, he said. Meetings of economists and of librarians of Hungarian origin have already taken place in Budapest, as have meetings of Catholic priests and Protestant ministers, and a congress of doctors from 20 countries.- The Hungarian Forum will intensify such contacts in future. The August conference considered collation of statistics on the Hungarian diaspora, aspects of its identity awareness, and the communities and institutions working among it. In August 1985 the Hungarian Forum will be holding a scientific conference of Hungarian specialists in agriculture, Szabó announced. Plans for 1986 include a conference on the role of Hungarians in world scientific and technical advance. Power plant equipment for China A subsidiary company of April 4.
