Sales of such high-capacity buses to the US started in the late 70s, when mass transport need acquired urgency, partly- for reasons of saving and partly due to busy city traffic. The articulated buses built by Ika­rus, one of Europe’s largest ve­hicle manufacturers, with an annual output of over 13,000 buses of various types, meet all Bill Coryell, transit programme director of Crown Coach Corp., is in Budapest for talks with Mogiirt on further contact op­portunities and his visit provid­ed an opportunity to ask him about further prospects. Higher rates of interest on savings deposits such as savings deposits for young people or flat construc­tion, interest is to go up by 2 pc to 8 pc after -a term, of seven years. Nine per-cent interest is to be paid for deposits for flat construction after a 10-year term. Excerpts from President Losonczi’s New Year address The rates of certain long-term savings deposits will be raised as from January 1, 1984, to pre­serve the real value of long­term deposits and help the rea­lization of long-term aims such as flat construction. At present the total sum of the population’s deposits amounts to 190,000 mil­lion forints, and increases by 10,000 to 15,000 million forints annually. The rates of interest on sav­ings deposits are to raised by 1 pc a year. Six per cent inter­est is to be paid after two-year deposits, and 7 pc after three- years. The so­cialist system of our society is the basis of our acknowledged international diplomacy.« BUS SALES TO U.S. Mogiirt, US firm plan more demonstration tours Yet another successful Hun­garian bus deal in the United States: 50 Ikarus-built articulat­ed buses have been sold via Mogiirt foreign trade co to the city of Houston, Texas, over­coming rather strong competi­tion. With that, as Mogiirt ex­port manager Gábor Lassú told the Daily News, they have so far sold nearly 250 such buses to the US, many of which are already in service in Louisville, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Portland. More buses will be put into service next year in J requirements. Ikarus was also ready to meet high American technical and other standards, and Federal rules which require that the buses must incorporate at least 50 per cent of US- made components. That is why the body and chassis—shipped to Mogiirt’s American partner, the factories of the Los Angeles- based Grown Coach Corpora­tion—are assembled and com­pleted with Cummins engines, Rockwell axles, Allison auto­matic speed gears, Westinghouse brakes, and Sheppard steering ourselves. That would fit for our manufacturing facilities and capabilities at the present time.” Mr Coryell praised the pro­duction capacities of Ikarus, which he described as “a large and sophisticated company with tremendous capacities in bus building.” And added that Mogiirt “is an outstanding trade partner with whom . Crown Coach and all the other related companies can work very closely in a forthright and honest busi­ness relationship.’’ Sales efforts with regard to Ikarus-built articulated buses will be continued in the United States. Boston, Columbus, Ohio, Newark, Spokane and other cities are the probable venues. Mr Lassú also pointed out that as regards Hungarian engineer­ing export to the United States, the deliveries of buses represent a significant contingent. In addition—in accordance with a contract concluded with the Toronto-based Ontario Bus Industries—a jointly produced demonstration bus will start its demo tour in several Canadian cities next year. The Hungarian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Min­ister Dr Tibor Melega, that of the US by Assistant Secretary of Commerce A. H. Kingon. During the session, the two sides surveyed the state of eco­nomic and trade relations, and noted that trade volume, in the five years since the signing of the trade agreement in 1978, has doubled compared with the low initial level. With regard to all main categories, both Hungarian exports and Hungary’s imports of American goods have increas­ed. The two delegations agreed that the economic features of the two countries make it pos­sible to significantly increase the level of trade, and they will make mutual efforts to achieve this. They will press for the di­versification of trade, and pro­mote joint ventures and third- market cooperation between companies of the two sides. They informed each other about the planned trade-boosting efforts that they will promote in com­mon. The Hungarian side rated it necessary that the present prac­tice of the most-favoured-nation treatment to. trade be expanded. Ibusz’s offers for ’84 With a 17 pc turnover rise in 1983, IBUSZ, Hungary’s biggest travel agency, this year has grossed over 12,000 million fo­rints, Friday told a press con­ference managing director Zol­tán Harsányi at the new hotel Flamenco here. Harsányi said there .had been “a spectacular increase in the numbers of visitors from Japan and the United States during 1983”. There was a rise also in outgoing tourism to the West. In 1984, IBUSZ plans several major programmes for incoming visitors. Budapest will be the venue of the 9th World Con­gress on Automation, and the 1984 World Driving Champion­ship will be held at Szilvás­várad. More than • 800 athletes and 10,000 spectators are ex­pected to attend the Karate World Cup in Budapest in March. IBUSZ offers 61 pro­grammes and tours for visitors, along with highlights like the 1984 Budapest Spring Festival. For Hungarians, 300 routes to 37 countries plus the Canary Islands and Madeira are plan­ned. The tours practically cover the globe, from Czechoslovakia to Vietnam, and to the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. P. H.
