A HALLÁSVESZTESÉG A National Institutes of Health beszéd­es hallásprogramjának vezetője^ Dr. Ralph Naunton, a hozzá feltett kérdésekre a következőket mondotta: A hallás romlása a U.S. lakosok között, határozottan növekszik - elsősorban azért, mert az emberek tovább élnek. Úgy számít­juk, hogy az 50 éven felüliek 40 vagy 50 százalékának a hallása már valamennyire leromlott és kb. 10 százalékuk igen rosz- szul hall. A nagyon nagy zaj, még rövid ideig is, kárt tehet a hallásban. Kisebb, de tartós zaj szintén ártalmas. A zajos gépek mellett dolgozóknak az évek folyamán a hallóidege sérül meg. Azt is gyanítjuk - habár bebizo­nyítani nem tudjuk -, hogy az évek során a porszívó, a házi villanyfűrész, a mosogató­gép vagy a gyepvágó gép zaja is észrevehe­tően rontja a hallást 50 éven alul. Mindig furcsa látvány voltam a környékünkön, amikor a motoros gyepvágó használatánál fülvédőt hordtam. A bömbölő zene is artalmas. Majmokon végzett kísérletekből tudjuk, hogy a majmok hallóidege leromlik, ha hosszú ideig disco- zajoknak vannak kitéve. Helytelenítjük azt a növekvő divatot, hogy sokan fülhallga­tóval zenét hallgatnak és úgy sétálnak, vagy kocognak. Körülbelül 13 millió amerikai rosszul hall - 20 közül majdnem 1. Ezek között másfél millió valóban süket és csak külön­leges tanfolyamon tud megtanulni beszél­ni, vagy jelbeszédet használ. További két milliónak olyan rossz a hallása, hogy csak nehézséggel tud beszélgetésben részt venni. A többiek valahogyan követni tudják a beszélgetést, ha előrehajolnak és nagyon odafigyelnek. VAN-E ELŐREHALADÁS A SÜKETSÉG KEZELÉSÉBEN? Az utóbbi évtizedben nagy előrehaladás történt - különösen uj sebészeti eljárások­kal. A sebészeti mikroszkóp például lehető­vé teszi, hogy a fül belsejében dolgozva, kijavítsák a dobhártyát és az apró csont­részecskéket. Ezzel a módszerrel a süket­ség leggyakoribb formájának, a középfül sérülésének gyógyításában rövid idő alatt nagy eredményeket értek ( el. Ezenkívül az antibiotikumok is csodás hatásuaknak bizonyultak a baktérias infekciók leküzdé­sében és az abból eredő hallásromlás meg­akadályozásában. Sebészettel ma már pótolhatják a közép­fülben a hang továbbításához szükséges három kis csontot, kifoltozhatják, vagy pótolhatják a dobhártyát. Két-három milli­méter nagyságú csontdarabkát vehetnek ki a fül mögül és ültethetnek a középfülbe, vagy néha a fülben a csontokat acrylic, vagy üveganyaggal pótoljak. Egy elektronikus beültetett hallókészülék­kel is kísérleteznek a teljesen süketeknél, aminek segítségével ezek is képesek lesznek beszélgetésben részt venni. A hangos zajokon kívül a hallás leromlását ostosclerosis is okozhatja - egy spongya- szerü csontkinövés a fűiben, ami gátolja a hangtovábbítást. A gyermekeknél és fiataloknál gyakran előforduló középfül­gyulladás is hallásveszteséget okozhat. Mr. Chairman, It is my pleasure to bring to you the greetings of the World Federation of Trade Unions and the per­sonal regards and best wishes from our President, Sándor Gáspár of Hungary. The Hungarian culture you honor todav has been developing since the beginning of recorded histo­ry. It is one of the finer contributions to the civi­lizing mission that shapes the human condition The greatest honor we can bestow, the deepest respect we can pay to our cultural past and present is its preservation for the future all of which requires en­during peace. Die long historical process of change is accelera­ted by the decay and failures of the capitalist sys­tem. The trend toward collective ownership and planned economies is irreversible. The danger is that the beneficiaries and therefore defendants of the status quo are not only using military force to arrest this historical development but also are threa­tening nuclear devastation unless they have their way. Unfortunately, they learn nothing from their mistakes. They react to each failure with shrill de­nunciations, more frenzied escalation of threats and sharp increases in military expenditures. The un­foreseen consequences are a further weakening of the economy and rising unemployment. The interest and welfare of the people are para­mount. Governments come and governments go - but the people go on forever. Hungarians in this country, while retaining their cultural identity, have become an important segment of the family of na­tions in our United States. This principle can and some day will be extended to include all of the US and all of Hungary and from there all the other nations and peoples of the world. One race, the hu­man race, working together in harmony to stop the war-mongers, win the peace, assure the perpetua­tion of life on earth, and promote the conditions for its well-being as our contribution to posterity - forever in peace, friendship and prosperity. There are no military solutions to social, econo­mic and political problems. Peace, friendship, trade, a mutual nuclear freeze and disarmament are huma­nity's only hope for survival. All who cherish cul­ture must cherish life. The will to live is the most compelling force on earth. The people will prevail. Your paper helps to spread the good work of people like Dr. Henley who have dedicated their time in life for the betterment of mankind. As you reminded us in your speech at the anniversary con­cert, “We have a rendezvous with destiny” /as also stated by Pres. Roosevelt in 1936/, Diis resulted in the defeat of Nazism and Fascism with the help of England, France and the Soviet Union and is still applicable today 46 years later. Even more so, to­day this applies to the whole human race. It is reassuring that there are Hungarian Americans who deserve Dr. Henley’s past friendship and continue the struggle for the interest of the American people and for the preservation of Peace.
