All of our groups were active, our attendance at services was good and we held our own financially. These seem to be the accepted guildelines of success and yet I myself do not necessarily use these guildelines. I feel that we offer a program for almost all ages, and our doors are open to all, regardless of color of skin or nationalistic background. If those who attend our services receive the spiritual guidance and strength that is necessary to live in these difficult times, then we have been successful. If our church school, and youth groups and choirs can strengthen one person’s spiritual foundation, then we have been successful. If we can somehow make people realize that Christianity isn’t old fashioned, but it is new for each generation, then we have been successful. Just as love and faith don’t change, so Jesus Christ doesn’t change. It is we who change. There are some in our congregation who feel that I don’t speak out enough on social issues such as race and poverty. If I don’t, it is because I feel that they are only small facets of the total picture. I feel that if I can change the individual person, then he or she will help to rectify the evils and problems of this world, and not just one part of it. He will do it because he is a consecrated and dedicated Christian. I am concerted about our church and it’s future, our denomination, our nation and the world. I feel that we have too many Christians in name only. We call ourselves a Christian nation and yet the President of the United States must ride around in a bullet-proof car that cost $500,000. It has a bullet-proof bubble and 2 tons of armor and could drive away at 50 miles an hour even if its tires had been shot. I am concerned about one of the worst enemies of Americans and what it is doing to young and old alike — and that is alcohol. More than 5 million people are known alcoholics, and that is one out of 40. We have more deaths on the highway because of drunken drivers than our losses in Viet- Nam. There are 25,000 deaths and 800,000 crashes annually. We call ourselves a Christian nation and yet our crime rate keeps rising. In 1959 we had 1,592,189 crimes. We’re over the 5,000,000 mark now. There has been a 66% increase in murders and 115% increase in forceable rapes since ’59. We are moving from being a great society to being a violent society. I am concerned about the truly great number of violent and cheap sex films. A producer of sex films recently commented on the fact that each one of his 20 movies has grossed 4 times its cost. It seems that vulgarity has become the common language of actors and actresses on stage and even on T.V. The more shocking the word, the greater
