REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 The President’s Page THE FLOOD SITUATION Foremost on our mind in these days is the flood which occurred in Hungary and Transylvania during the month of May. WHAT IS THE SITUATION? We know now the facts as far as Hungary is concerned. In the North East of Szabolcs-Szatmár counties 50,000 people from 49 towns and villages were evacuated; 6,000 homes were totally destroyed, many more heavily damaged; church buildings in 43 villages shared the same fate, in addition to 131 schools and other public buildings. A total of 35,000 people lost all their belongings, including domestic animals. The loss exceeds 60 million dollars. THE LIST OF VILLAGES in the flood area includes: Cégénydányád, Csaholc, Csengersima, Csengőd, Csász- ló, Darnó, Fehérgyarmat, Fülpösda- róc, Gyügye, Garbolc, Győrtelek, Her- mánszeg, Jánkmajtis, Kömörő, Kishi- das, Kérsemlyén, Kisar, Kisszekeres, Komlódtótfalu, Mánd, Nagyar, Nagy- géc, Nagyhódos, Nagyszekeres, Náb- rád, Nemesborzova, Ócsvaapáti, Panyo- la, Penyige, Szamosangyalos, Számos- becs, Szamoskér, Szamosoroszi, Sza- mossályi, Szamosszeg, Szamostatárfal- va, Szamosújlak, Tunyogmatolcs, Tur- ricse, Tyukoditanya, Újtyukod, Ura, Zsarolyán. About 95% of the population in these towns are of the Reformed faith. Attempts are being made to have the facts from other areas of the flood both in Hungary and in Transylvania. We will share these with you as soon as we have them. WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR? As soon as the tragic news reached us, we tried to find ways to help our brethren. Due to the fact that the emergency aspects of the problem have been taken care of by the respective governments, it became clear that WE SHOULD DEVELOP A LONG RANGE PLAN FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF DESTROYED OR HEAVILY DAMAGED CHURCH BUILDINGS. Thus were informed our denominational leaders and thus were planned ways to raise Flood Relief Funds in all our Hungarian Reformed churches in America. WHAT CAN BE DONE NOW? The latest issue of the Reformátusok Lapja carries the suggestions as follows: (1) Special envelopes to be used for Flood Relief until the end of 1970; envelopes can be ordered from the Synod President. (2) Special collections to be taken occasionally. (3) Fund raising events to be sponsored. (4) Allocating a certain portion of the general benevolent budget for this purpose. (5) Challenging church, fraternal and social organizations for generous contributions. In addition to the envelopes (which will be ready in 3 weeks) we already have flyers for general distribution: one without pictures and another one carrying the pictures of 12 church buildings. All these items can be ordered through the synod’s office before July 26 or after September 6. I am very happy to report that Dr. R. Helfferich’s office already contributed a seed money of $1,000 for this purpose. Shortly after this, our Passaic church matched it with another $1,000 and several other churches of our synod also made sizeable donations. I am sure sooner or later ALL our churches will “beg earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints” (2. Cor. 8:3-4) knowing that the cost of reconstructing the church buildings will be well over one million dollars! Our churches should send their contributions to OUR NEW SYNOD TREASURER, DR. JOSEPH PIRI (2673 East 124th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44120). Of course, contributions for this purpose should be designated for “Flood Relief” and can be earmarked even to individual churches in the flood area if a church wishes to do so. The Synod President is always ready to provide information in this project. Call him collect if necessary. NEW VACANCIES Wallingford, Conn. Interested persons should call the Synod President as soon as possible. After Aug. 4, Rev. Joseph Kecskemethy will be the administrator (Passaic, N.J.). Kalamazoo, Mich, becomes vacant as of Sept. 1, 1970. Administrator: Rev. D. D. Parragh (Chicago, 111.). Other vacancies include: Dayton, Ohio; Gary, Ind.; Niles, Ohio; Welland, Ont., Canada. NEW SYNOD TREASURER Upon the recomemndation of the Nominating Committee, the Conference Council filled the vacancy, created by the resignation of Rev. J. Marsalko with Dr. Joseph Piri, our Presbyter-at-Large (By-Laws V/b). Dr. Piri will assume his new duties on Sept. 1,1970, but is already assisting Rev. Marsalko in August. Therefore AFTER AUGUST 1, 1970 ALL PAYMENTS SHOULD BE FORWARDED TO DR. PIRI’S ADDRESS which is as follows: 2673 East 124th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44120. SYNOD PRESIDENT ON VACATION While Dr. Butosi will be on vacation from Aug. 4 to Sept. 4, Rev. Arpad L. Beretz vice-president will take his place. Address: 7520 Wood- mar Ave., Hammond, Ind. 46323. Phone: (219) 844-8632 or 845-2288. By the way: the President’s “vacation” means participation in the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa. PERSONAL NOTE Rev. Kalman Csia spent a few days in the hospital with a back ailment. He is improving in Ligonier now. IN INDIANA HARBOR, IND. The First Hungarian Ev. & Ref. Church celebrated their 45th anniversary. Dr. A. A. Ludwig is the pastor. May God bless them all! YOUTH CAMP Is shaping up. It will be held from Aug. 16 to 22 at Camp Kanesatake, Spruce Creek, Pa. Registration deadline is Aug. 1. (In the East those who want to go by bus, should register with $17 before July 15 in So. Norwalk!) IN THE EAST Passaic will celebrate their 75th anniversary on Sept. 27. — Classis meeting will be held on Oct. 11 in the new Parish Center of Bridgeport. — Woodbridge will have Ladies’ Aid anniversary on Oct. 25. — Rumors are circulating that other celebrations may be held in Bridgeport (Nov.) and Norwalk (Oct. 4).
