REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 President’s Page Rev. Dr. John Bütösi UCC ASSEMBLY IN MILWAUKEE This annual gathering of conference and instrumentality leaders took place in the first week of February. Our Synod was represented by President John Butosi and Secretary Arpad Beretz. Mrs. A. Beretz was a voluntary visitor. It was good to note that Calvin Synod is no longer in the last place in basic support giving. . . OUR CONFERENCE COUNCIL met in New York City on February 16-19. On February 18 it had a constructive consultation with the four chief officers of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. THE SYNOD MEETING is set now: it will be held in the Holiday Inn, Ligonier, Penna, on April 14, 15, 16, 1969. Detailed information will be mailed in The Calvin Synod News. Delegates should be aware of committee meetings which will start on April 14 and make their arrival necessary on April 13 (Sunday evening). ELECTIONS: The Rev. Julius Paal was elected pastor of the First Hungarian E&R Church of Los Angeles, Calif, on Jan. 19, 1969, planning to assume his duties on May 1. — The Miami Hungarian Christian Church elected the Rev. Nicholas Var- konyi on January 26, 1969 who assumed his duties on February 23, 1969. — The Rev. Dr. Nicholas Sewell is the new pastor of the Phoenixville Hungarian E&R Church, assuming his duties on May 1, 1969. — In Flint, Michigan the Rev. Dr. Joseph Arvay Zsíros’ election is scheduled for March 2, 1969. VACANT PULPITS: 1. Gary Indiana. Administrator: Rev. Arpad Beretz, 7520 Woodmar Ave., Hammond, Ind. — 2. Dayton, Ohio. Administrator: Rev. Aaron Elek, 1942-50 West 32nd St., Cleveland, Ohio 44113. — 3. Kalamazoo, Michigan. Administrator: Rev. Desmond Parragh, 8260 West Foster Terrace, Norridge, Chicago, Illinois 60656. TRANSFERS: The Rev. Frank Endrei was transferred to the Cleveland Presbytery from our Synod while the Rev. Louis Becske was transferred from the Beaver-Butler Presbytery to our Synod. BUFFALO CHURCH JOINS SYNOD The West Side Hungarian Reformed Church of Buffalo, N. Y. decided at their congregational meeting on February 9, 1969 to join our Synod. As the pastor, the Rev. Paal Kantor reports they joined us not because of pressure but because of their free choice and conviction. We rejoice in their decision, congratulate the pastor, the consistory, and the whole congregation, welcome them not with empty promises but a realistic request: let us help one another to fulfill our task as Hungarian Reformed Churches in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ. May He bind us together inseparately! CLEVELAND WEST SIDE CHURCH bought a lot of three acres with a church edifice. The purchasing price was $133,000.00. “This is both a joy and a headache,” the Rev. Aaron Elek, pastor of the West Side Church writes, “as this is only the beginning. But we rejoice that we have a place to move to if urban renewal would necessitate it.” THE BUDGET FOR 1969 was prepared by the Conference Council. It was decided to present a unified budget in the conviction that mission giving is just as important as administration quota. The travel equalization quota was raised to $85.00 due to the fact that in the past several years this fund was not sufficient to take care of the traveling expenses of the delegates. We urge our treasurers to send the $85.00 before Synod meeting. THE NEW YOUTH ADVISOR is the Rev. Arpad Beretz. Due to the fact that Rev. Frank Endrei resigned, Rev. Beretz consented to assume this duty for the 1969 Youth Camp. SYNOD APPEAL The Conference Council decided to submit three special projects to the Synod meeting as our 1969 mission projects: 1. The Debrecen Fund to help restore the old College at Debrecen, Hungary; 2. Heart-Lung Unit for Transylvania; 3. Support to the Uruguay Hungarian work. (The idea is that each year the Synod will recommend the support of Hungarian Reformed work in a given country according to need and importance.) SICKNESS The Rev. Ernest Zugor reports that his wife underwent a serious operation in January 1969. Let us pray for one another! Dr. Piri was also hospitalized for two weeks. THE NEW FAMILY PROTECTION PLAN The Conference Council urges each of our congregations to enroll the eligible ministers in this insurance plan which provides death and disability benefits. We need 75% enrollment of eligible ministers before this plan becomes available. If further information is needed, please contact the office of the Synod President. Mr. Don A. Bundy, Secretary of the Pension Boards will also be available at the Synod meeting to provide information. INSTALLATIONS The Rev. Dr. George Csia will be installed in Pittsburgh, Penna, on March 23, 1969; the Rev. Victor Orth in Chicago on April 20, 1969; the Rev. Louis Becske, in Fairport Harbor, Ohio on April 27, 1969; and the Rev. Zoltán Kovács in Homestead, Penna, on May 4, 1969. THE ANNUAL REPORTS OF THE CONGREGATIONS are greatly appreciated by the Synod President. Please, send these reports to his office as soon as they are available. “The Critical Analysis of our Smaller Churches” is recommended by the Conference Council as one of the possible and urgently needed topics at our next retreat, and evidently the annual reports are indispensable sources to deal with this problem. HUNGARIAN REFUGEES now waiting in Italy and Austria are still in great need of American sponsors. Interested persons or churches should call Mrs. Margaret Shackford, Presbyterian Resettlement Services, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, N. Y. 10027. (Telephone: 212-RI9-1400). Rev.
