Remélem, nem fogtok elmaradni, mint némelyek. AZ IFJÚSÁG KÖRÉBŐL. C. E. Topic for October 16. WHAT DOES ALCOHOL DO TO PEOPLE AND TO SOCIETY? Matt. 18:4-6. I have a feeling that the person responsible for this topic intended to have us commentators answer it in the language and spirit of a total abstainer. Well, candidly, I can’t do it. Not because I, personally, am a drunkard, or that I wish to defend those who indulge in intoxicating liquors. The reason is that I don’t believe that alcohol as such impoverishes people and deteriorates society. Excessive alcohol may, but moderate indulgence not necessarily. I suppose you have all noticed that when a man or woman became an inveterate booze-hound it was never because of the sheer love for whiskey, but because of some other reason. If you happen to impugn the truthfulness of this statement, study closely the life of any person so addicted. Take England for example. There is no Prohibition there, yet there is less crime and better home- life in that country than in America. And I believe the inhabitants are as normal and as healthy as we are. You might argue that England is on a different continent and besides her people are homogenous. I concede this. But let us look at Canada for a change. The people of that country are practically of the same stock and races as those of the United States. What has alcohol done to people and society there? Read their crime reports, or better still, peruse the records of their churches. The answers will not only be informative, but to a great extent astonishing. Wouldn’t it be wise and worth while for us to return to Jesus and see what He says about alcohol and its users? Frank Nagy. “WHITHER YOUNG PEOPLE IN RELIGION” Those young people who had the privilege of attending the National C. E. Conference at Lackawanna, the latter part of August, will no doubt recall that this was one of the four major topics discussed at the conference. To those who were present this article will be but a review, but to those not present, we hope hereby to give a brief report and summary of the fine address and discussion so capably led by the Rev. L. A. Gates of Buffalo, N. Y. “Whither Young People in Religion” was the great question that loomed up for discussion before those interested in this subject. In analyzing the purpose and aim that individuals have in life, we conclude that life and its greatest enjoyment seems to be the chief concern of man. As a C.
