AMERICAN Hungarian Journal No Olympics After All For Budapest? It would seem that the NOlimpia campaign has achieved its goal of forcing a referendum on Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, according to Hungarian news site Index.hu. The campaign was launched this past January by the ‘Momentum Mozgalom,’ a hitherto unknown Hungarian youth movement, in order to force decision-makers to withdraw Budapest’s bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024. In a statement, the group’s president, András Fekete-Győr, said that the group had officially submitted 266,151 signatures to the Capital Election Committee, far more than the 138,000 necessary to trigger a referendum. The campaign hopes to ask Budapest residents the following question: “Do you agree that the Municipality of Budapest should withdraw its bid from the organization of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games?” The openly anti-government and anti-establishment Momentum, founded in 2015 by a group of young Hungarians seeking radical change in the country’s public life. Over the course of the past 30 days, they collected signatures at stands set up throughout the city, and eventually gained the support of opposition parties in their endeavor as well. Speaking to the press, Fekete-Győr claimed that the NOlimpia signature drive “was one of the most uplifting periods in the history of Budapest democracy. While some of the submitted signatures will not doubt be declared invalid, based on the results of previous signature drives only about 1/5 to lA of them tend to be invalid for one reason or another, meaning that, unless something drastic occurs, there are almost certainly enough votes for the referendum process to move forward. “Our message to [ruling] Fidesz, [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán and [Budapest Mayor] István Tarlós is that it was a grave error on their part not to have sought out the public’s opinion on Hungary’s bid to host the Olympics,” Fekete-Győr said in front of the election office. Momentum will now do so in their place, he added. The Momentum leader also called on Orbán and Tarlós not to “stymie” the referendum, and claimed that doing so would be “an act of cowardice” on their part. He also went on to argue that getting in the way of the referendum would also be a “betrayal” of those who support Hungary’s Olympic bid. The Capital election committee now has 45 days to examine all the signatures. Following this period, it is unclear as to exactly when the referendum would be held, as this depends on the political desires of Fidesz, but also on the speed with which the Hungarian judiciary and bureaucracy can move forward with the technical and legal aspects of a potential referendum. This means that, while the middle of the summer might be the most likely time for such a vote, it might even take place after the IOC’s official selection of a winning city in September, hmgarytoday.hu ■ INGATLAN ELADAS/LIZING * Greater Los Angeles Area 818.445.1229 I Morris Williams realty ANDRAS KOVÁCS http://www.kovacsrealtor.com/ ANGYALFI RENT- A-CAR AUTÓBÉRLÉS MAGYARORSZÁGON A. PM Orban’s goverment plans to close all migrant holding camps within Hungary Hungary plans to gradually close down all the migrant camps located within the country as it prepares to set up camps on the border instead, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff said on Thursday.Janos Lazar also reiterated that the government plans to set up camps at 2-3 places on the southern border, where it wants to keep migrants while their asylum requests are being assessed. Amnesty International said last week that Hungary’s plan to detain all asylum seekers in containers near the border was “yet another disturbing move in a pattern of demonizing this already very vulnerable group.” hungarytoday.hu The English Page of the Hírlap can serve as a bridge between the non-Hungarian-speaking members of the family and the community. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call (626) 765-4534 Hungary’s indices show the country’s economic model is viable, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told lawmakers on Monday on the first day of the Parliament’s spring session. All economic policy goals set for 2016 have been met, he said in his speech, which also covered migration issues and the government’s looming battles with Brussels. “Hungarians have worked hard for their achievements,” the prime minister said. “Their work is gradually paying off, irrespective of party affiliation.” Economic growth, a shrinking public debt and big foreign trade surplus as well as record low unemployment and the healthy state of the tourism sector are among the past year’s achievements, he said. Last year Hungary reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio to 74% and the budget surplus in January was at a 17-year high, he said. Orbán said the government’s deficit target of 2.4% of GDP this year was “clearly” achievable. Hungary’s economy grew by 2% last year, he noted, adding that the government targets a growth rate of 4.1% for this year and 4.3% for 2018. He also said 2016 had been a record year for foreign trade, noting that Hungary had generated a trade surplus of around 10 billion euros. The Hungarian Prime Minister noted in his opening address to parliament that the unemployment rate was at a record low of 4.4% in the fourth quarter last year, arguing that “full employment is just an arm’s reach away”. Putting Hungary’s economic indicators into historical perspective, Orbán argued that Hungary was on the verge of an economic breakthrough. The prime minister said that over the past 120 years, the country’s economic performance had reflected a cyclical nature. Between 1900 and 2010, averaged out, the country’s annual GDP per capita growth rate was never above 1.5%. This left Hungary trailing the developed countries, and attempts to close that gap continually proved futile, Orbán said. Since 2010, however, Hungary has been registering higher GDP growth and consumption rates than the euro zone, adding that the employment rate was above the European Union average. Orbán urged the parliamentary parties not to “squander” the chance to make economic progress thanks to achievements made between 2010 and 2016. hungarytoday.hu Stats Office: Average Gross Wage In Hungary Approaching €1000 The average gross wage in Hungary rose by an annual 5.7% to 288,800 forints (EUR 936) in December, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Net wage growth outpaced the increase, climbing 7.3% to 192,100 forints. The average gross wage rose by 5.5% to 305,368 forints, while net wages increased by 7.1% to 203,071 forints. Real wages are expected to grow by around 10% this year, primarily as a result of the wage agreement reached between the employers’ association and trade unions for six years starting in 2017, the economy minister said, commenting on the KSH data. Gergely Suppan, analyst at Takarékbank, said real wages in Hungary could grow by 7.6% this year, assuming average annual inflation of 2.4%. hungarytoday.hu Highest Quality Care at the Best Price!
