AMERICAN Hungarian Journal OBITUARY JULIUS JANCSO 06/02/1923 - 01/30/2017 In his 94th year, after a long illness, Julius Jancso passed away peacefully on January 30, 2017 in Los Angeles, CA. Born in Budapest, Hungary as “Jancsó Gyula”, Julius was the epitomy of the self-made man. He rose from simple circumstances and became an electronic engineer, led a large company to success. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, he started his own business, became a master piano maker and music instrument maker, and many Hungarian performers relied on his skills. He also got involved in auto racing with a Renault Gordini Alpine prototype. In 1965, Julius married Susan Vajda, a stewardess with MALÉV Hungarian Airlines. They had two daughters, Susan and Kat, and moved to the United States in 1976, the Bicentennial Year. They settled in, Los Angeles, where a distant relative of his had a pastry shop on Melrose Avenue. Julius tried his hand at many trades: he repaired medical instruments and roofs, got the real estate license and the contractors license. Soon he ended up as a newspaper publisher and restaurant owner. In 1989, Julius and a friend founded AMERIKAI MAGYAR HÍRLAP, a Hungarian weekly newspaper with one English Page for non-Hungarian speaking family members. It is the only Hungarian weekly on the West Coast, still alive and well today in spite of the difficulty printed papers face in the Internet age. On September 27, 1992, Julius opened the CSARDAS HUNGARIAN RESTAURANT on Melrose, which became a favorite meeting place of the Los Angeles Hungarian community, and the site of many excellent cultural events, from gypsy music and poetry readings to a presentation by Edward Teller in an election year. Julius loved fast cars, he owned a Mustang and an Oldsmobile Trofeo. In his later days, he had to make do with a scooter, and he rode that with his hair blowing in the wind. Julius is survived by his wife Susan, sister Ilona and her family in Hungary, daughters Susan Ashford and Kat Michaels, their husbands, children and dogs. Memorial service will be held at the Los Angeles Hungarian House on Feb. 12.
