Hungary’s Unemployment Rate Drops To Record-Low Of 4 Percent Hungary’s rolling average three-month jobless rate dropped to 4 percent in the August-October period from 4.1 percent in the previous three month period, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Wednesday. The August-October rate was down from 4.7 percent in the same period a year earlier. The rate covers unemployment among Hungarians between the ages of 15 and 74. In absolute terms, there were 183,500 unemployed in Hungary in August-October, 5,500 fewer than in July-September and 35,800 fewer than in the same period a year earlier. Commenting on the data, Péter Cseresnyés, state secretary at the economy ministry, said 735,000 jobs have been created since 2010, of which 560,000 have been added in the private sector. Over the past seven years, the employment rate has risen from 54.6 percent to 68.7 percent, Cseresnyés said, adding that the ministry is targeting an employment rate above 70 percent. The unemployment rate is at the lowest point since Hungary’s regime change in 1989-90, he added. Finally, there are the Cat­egory V languages, which the FSI describes as “exception­ally difficult for native English speakers.” This category, whose languages are deemed difficult for differences in pronunciation, grammar, and alphabet from English, includes Arabic, Chi­nese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, and Japanese. Within this classification scheme, Hungarian is rated a IV*, with the asterisk signifying that it is “more difficult than other languages in the same cat­egory,” such as Hebrew, Slovak, or Tagalog. While not as difficult as Japanese, then, mastering the language of the Magyars will require roughly one year of full­time study.
