AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Si.. Former Hungarian Foreign Minister and Ambassador Hits Out at Orbán Government for “Fighting Brussels” Hungary is the single member state of the European Union, which is desperately “engaged in war” with Brussels, according to Géza Jeszenszky, the former Foreign Minister of Hungary, who submitted the country’s request to join the EU back in 1994. The former Hungarian Ambassador to USA and Norway said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could pursue such antagonistic rhetoric toward the West, because he knew Brussels would not kick Hungary out of the community. The biggest problem is that while most of the Hungarians live on a very low level in terms of personal income, and the Orbán government provides them with “imaginary foes”, other countries in the Central and Eastern European region rather make progress instead of “conjuring up enemies”, Jeszenszky said in an interview with news television HifTV. “PM Orbán deliberately misleads the public, however, the point would be to approach the Western standards of living”, he added. The Hungarian government’s current anti- West rhetoric serves its interests in domestic politics, but more and more Hungarians recognize that “friends should not be looked for in the East”, according to Jeszenszky. Although Jeszenszky is convinced Hungary will not be excluded from the European Union, he can imagine the radical cutback of the financial support Hungary receives from the EU. “It is a real danger that as a result of the several infringement procedures at the end Hungary will loose significant EU funds, which has maintained or slightly improved our standard of living in recent years”, he said. Commenting on Russia, the former Foreign Minister said he never considered himself anti-Russian, however, the way of current Russian politics reminds him of “tsarist and stalinist times”. The Russia-backed upgrade of Hungary’s nuclear power plant in Paks increases the country’s dependence from Russia even more than in the case of gas and oil imports, he insisted, hungarytoday.hu Rally Mocking Orbán Government Held in Budapest According to wire service Reuters, “around 4,000-5,000 demonstrators” walked through downtown Budapest last Saturday as part of a satirical “"March of Peace for the Government and Russia... and Against Everything Else.” The event was staged by the Two-Tailed Dog Party (Kétfarkú Kutya Párt), a joke party that came to prominence last year mocking the Orbán government’s ultimately failed referendum on the EU’s proposed refugee quota plan. This mock ‘rally’ comes on the heels of weeks of protest following passage of an amendment to Hungary’s higher-educa-A sign mocking the perceived authoritarian tendencies of the Orbán government, by adding a cross to the top of the seal of the Communist-era People’s Republic of Hungary tion law that has been widely seen as an attempt to target The Central European University (CEU). Hungarian wire service MTI reported that Two-Tailed Dog leader Gergely Kovács addressed the crowd, telling them in a tongue-in-cheek address that this protest was aimed at “retaking the streets from a few dozen people” who had recently demanded that “billions of migrants should be re-settled in A mock conspiracy-theory sign with Hungary”. Participants in the demonstration held up signs mocking Orbán’s perceived Russian-friendly policies, as well as his anti-EU rhetoric. The signs were sarcastic twists on some of the government’s own slogans, such as: “Ban demonstrations!”, “Down with freedom of speech!”, “No pensions!”, and “We won’t allow Soros-financed provocateurs to disturb the March of Peace!”. Many attendees chanted slogans such “Russian tanks to Referencing the Fidesz government’s controversial “Lex Heineken” bill from earlier this year, this sign reads “Hungarian beer foam on Hungarian mustaches” as “No more elections!”, “Out with civil groups” or Hungary!”. In explaining why she took part in this mock ‘rally,’ 17- year-old Laura Kelemen told Reuters that “The Fidesz party is slowly dismantling democracy.” During the march, communist-era songs were played from loudspeakers on a van. At the end of the event, organizers issued an “official” declaration of war on Brussels. According to these organizers, the ‘rally’ was supposedly attended by “30 million people”. hungarytoday.hu Avarage Gross Wage In Hungary Rose By 10% The average gross wage in Hungary rose by 10.7% year-on-year to 274,800 forints (EUR 848) in February, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said.
