Hungarian Journal Things You Should Know About Hungarians on Holiday Check out the following 5 light-hearted observations and see if you recognise anyone you know (but before you read on, please note these are not meant to offend anyone - Anglo or Magyar. It’s just a bit of fun!) Hungarians know all about the pleasure/pain principle. The typical Magyar male will almost certainly not have physically prepared himself for his gruelling annual holiday hike around the hills or 100km a day cycle ride, which will inevitably form part of his holiday ‘program’. Instead, there appears to be some form of pleasure he derives from pushing himself to perform impossible physical feats far above his fitness level (as tough as he is) during the one week in the year when the temperature is unbearably hot and dangerously dehydrating. (Note: Hungarians, unlike their English counterparts, can string a sentence together without having to refer to the weather). The proud Hungarian male will not shirk at any challenge you put in front of him and will most likely wear any holiday injury he incurs like a badge of honour. Hungarians are what they eat. The average Hungarian only tends to eat what might be described as typical Hungarian grub; therefore they cannot be anything but Hungarian. In most tourist areas outside of Budapest, the only cuisine on offer is traditional Hungarian; no chance of any cultural cross overs occurring here! So, forget your light Mediterranean salads and pea and summer herb fritters. Even in the hottest weather the average Hungarian cannot roam far without stocking up on a hearty and filling home-made meat stew. Or failing that a lángos loaded with cheese, cream, meats and veg. Most Hungarians love to make a ‘bogrács’ (their version of a BBQ) especially when on holiday. And they don’t need to worry if they run out of ingredients for their beloved Lecsó (a Hungarian pepper, onion and tomato stew); because in some holiday resorts you will even find a vending machine with them in alongside the tejföl and Túró Rudi. Hungarians are family friendly. Hungary is an extremely family friendly place, and that’s why when Hungarians go on holiday, their entire family tend to go with them. Everyone is happy in each other’s company, regardless of age; something which appears to be deteriorating rapidly in some other cultures. The family ‘unit’ is usually very strong and all embracing, unless you are a dog of course. Having said that, for some reason small dogs can be classed as ‘pets’, whereas the big hairy objects which can be found outside in gardens which bark all day and night in rural areas are, to some, apparently not. Another thing I have noticed is that when on holiday, the women seem to spend a lot of time exclusively looking after and focusing all their energies on their infants. I suppose this allows for the men folk to over exert themselves physically on their holiday pursuits of cycling, hiking, fishing or eating and drinking. Or maybe all five... Hungarians know how to dress for the summer! Bum bags are indispensable holiday wear for any red blooded Hungarian male, along with three quarter length jean shorts of some description. With this ensemble you can add a football tee-shirt or go without (males only). During the summer months it is also ‘de rigueur’ for older men with big stomachs to roll up their vests over their bellies for all to see, and occasionally sport ill-fitting budgie smugglers. You have been warned! There is also a proclivity to wearing socks with sandals. With this information to hand, there is no reason why a ‘Hungarian on Holiday’ should ever go undetected. They will continue to return year in year out to the same place, or at least not venture too far outside of their comfort zone where other forms of cuisine, culture, or life may exist. The great thing about most Hungarians is that they like to live simply. You don’t have to provide a 4 star hotel or fancy bed linen and puffed up pillows to impress these guys. Just good wholesome food, cold beer, a hard mattress, and a good hiking trail or fishing lake...and you are away. But whatever you do don’t hold back on the paprika, pálinka, tejföl, or pörkölt. Or you will be sure to know about it. But you know what the best way to spot a Hungarian on holiday is? Easy! Just look out for their all-encompassing hospitality and generosity.
