Youth Concert with a Hungarian Pianist Left to right: Eva Polgar with conductor Dr. Paul J. Sherman and the Pasadena Summer Youth Chamber Orchestra; Judith Nesleny presents the Corvina Cultural Circle’s Certificate to Eva Polgar Photos: Andrea Hegedűs, Leslie Eloed The city of Pasadena is known for sponsoring its’ young talent, in science, music and sports. Last Saturday evening was especially a memorable one, because the program concentrated on Concertos. The conductor, Dr. Paul J. Sherman selected the program so, that the young artists would be shown in their best. We’ve heard Rossini’s Overture, Telemann’s Concerto for viola - the instrument you rarely hear in solo the Beriot Violin Concerto, and the 1st movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto. All beautifully played by the orchestra and performers as well. To top this very demanding and brilliantly selected program Hungarian pianist Eva Polgar, Grand Prize winner of the 12th Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, presented a WORLD CLASS performance of the 2nd Piano Concerto of Franz Liszt. Ms. Polgar flew in from Texas, where she is working on her doctoral studies in music. We were amazed by her vibrant technic, enjoyed her beautifully delineated melody lines, Liszt is so beloved for, and charmed by her lovely stage presence. Congratulations to Ms. Polgar, we shall follow her career, and remember this glowing performance of Liszt, for ever! The audience celebrated the young artists with a long standing ovation. A big ‘BRAVO’ for the young orchestra members - all under the age of 20! - Congratulations to Mme. Roberta Wilcox, artistic director, who organized the event. Thank you for this memorable evening, wishing to hear more like this in the future. jp^ How To Enjoy Budapest For (Nearly) Nothing? Many of us travel to Budapest at summer, now’s the time to enjoy the natural splendour of the city. But what if you’re a bit short on cash? No worries. Be it picnics in city parks, panoramic views, relaxing bike rides or market stalls with free nibbles, Wizz Air’s Facebook friends and Budapest’s residents show us all the best things in the city are free. Here are some recommendation from other travelers. “Jog on Margaret Island! This pedestrianised island [Margit Sziget in Hungarian] is in the middle of the Danube and gorgeous to visit on a summer’s day. It only takes 20 minutes to walk around - quicker if you fancy that jog.” Mati Ricardo Karaskiewicz “Hungary’s magnificent Parliament Building, facing the Danube, is one of the largest in the country. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it is easily one of the most beautiful, too. If you’re an EU citizen, you can go inside for free.” Gianina Vranau “Walk up to Budapest’s Citadella, a fortress perched on top of Gellért Hill. It was built in 1851 and stands 235m above the city. It offers panoramic views of Budapest and beyond. It is open until 11pm, but it’s at its most romantic at sunset.” Harri Beau “Don’t miss out on Budapest’s free walking tours (freebudapesttours.hu) They run twice a day, every day, and offer a great insight into the city. Choose either the Orientation Tour (meet at Deák tér at 10.30am) or the Essential Pest Tour (meet at Deák tér at 2.30pm).” Cristina Checchi “My suggestions are to lie on the grass on Margaret Island; get soaking wet in the interactive fountain on Szabadság Square; hire a bike and cycle along the banks of the Danube; and get your photo taken with the fat policeman near St Stephen’s Basilica!” Oksana Pashchenko “Now that summer is here, I say pack a picnic with all your favourite Hungarian delicacies and find somewhere to hang out in Városliget, our city park. In Budapest, there’s nothing better than whiling away an afternoon in the sunshine!” Maria Maska “Budapest is full of truly beautiful buildings, but for me there is one that stands out from Hajóutak bárhová a világon Hívják ZSUZSÁT TEL: (310) 652-5294 FAX: (310) 652-5287 1-888-532-0168 the rest - the State Opera House, set majestically on Andrássy Avenue, the grandest boulevard in the city. It’s free to go inside and that’s the best bit: the interior of the Opera House glitters like a giant jewellery box.” Albert Esmendia Baltasar “Cave Church is a quiet place of worship, carved into the rock at the foot of Gellért Hill, which overlooks Liberty Bridge. During the Communist years it was blocked up, but now it is open, and looked after by the Hungarian Paulite monks. There is a modest entry fee of 500 Hungarian forints (less than €2) to go in. If you are of a religious bent, you should attend a service and marvel at the church’s fantastic natural acoustics.” Andre Várni “The Chain Bridge, or Széchenyi Bridge, connects Buda and Pest and is one of Budapest’s best sights. It’s free to walk across and offers beautiful views of the city. Just make sure you get an iconic shot of yourself with one of the four lions that stand guard at each side of the bridge!” Louisa Johnson “I love Budapest’s Central Market Hall. It’s my top tip for foodies visiting the city - it’s packed with row upon row of stalls selling speciality foods! It’s a great place to nibble on free tasters while you take in the sights and aromas.” Kaska Rubine xpatloop.com Magyar Roots on the Washington Mall Hungarian folk dancers share a laugh after their performance at the opening ceremony The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival opened today in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall. The festival, an international exposition of living cultural heritage that began in 1967, this year features Hungarian culture under the banner “Hungarian Heritage; Roots to Revival.” It’s quite something to see the images of Hungarian dancers and musicians in national dress with the backdrop of the Smithsonian museums and the great Washington Monument. “The peculiarity of cultural capital,” said Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics at the opening ceremony, “is that the more you give away, the more you end up getting. The more you share, the richer you make yourself and everyone you share it with.” “You will not only see a Hungarian program here but rather a true Central European one,” he said, “one that displays everything we are proud of in our part of the world, inspirational multi-ethnicity, various forms of influence among our peoples.” Joining the deputy prime minister in opening the festival was Tamás Fellegi, who talked about the similarity between the festival’s goals and the new Hungarian Initiative Foundation that he heads. “It is symbolic for us that the first program that our foundation supports is the Smithsonian Folklife Festival,” said Fellegi. The mission of the new foundation, he said, “is to build lasting value by reviving and strengthening the cultural, educational and emotional bonds between the United States and Hungary.” The United States, he reminded, is home to the largest Hungarian diaspora community, nearly 1.5 million. Supporting the Folklife Festival, said Fellegi, is “the first important step toward our great mission of deepening understanding and ties between our great nations.” The festival runs June 26 to 30 and July 3 to 7.
