The 39.6 x 26.4 mm (c. 1.5 x 1 inch) coin is dedicated to the Őrség National Park. The Őrség is home to no less than 111 protected plant species and an exceptionally rich, diverse population of wildlife. The park was founded on March 1, 2002 and its coat of arms features one of the region’s most common protected butterflies, the Dusky Large Blue (Maculinea nausithous), as the Őrség is home to Europe’s largest population of this species. Hundreds of years ago, the first Hungarian tribes established guard posts in this wooded countryside of rolling hills to defend the western border, giving the Őrség its name (őr means ‘guard’ in Hungarian). Over the centuries, the people of this region have formed the landscape, with small farms nestled in the land in harmony with nature. The region’s sub-Alpine climate results in large amounts of precipitation and there are three rivers, the Rába, the Zala and Kerka, and numerous smaller streams and brooks. Along with gentle hills, valleys, meadows, small marshes, and moors, 63% of the region is covered with forests. The endangered large blue butterfly is depicted on the front of the 5,000 forint coin. The reverse shows the typi-cal architectural style of the Szalafő-Pityerszer settlement, as drawn by Gábor Gáti. The two sides are meant to ex-press the harmony between the natural, ethnological, and cultural values of the region, one of the unique attractions of the Őrség National Park. The coin contains 31.46 grams of .925 (sterling) silver. Only 5,000 proof and 3,000 brilliant uncirculated specimens have been authorized and they are available for $67.50 and $62.50 each respectively. The second coin honors the 125th anniversary of the birth of the poet and writer Dezső Kosztolányi (Mar. 29, 1885 - Nov. 3, 1936), in the city of Szabadka (now Serbia). After study at the University of Budapest and a short time in Vienna, became a full-time journalist. His first volume of poetry, The Complaints of a Poor Little Child, was published in 1920 and was the start of an era in which he published a book nearly annually. Beginning in the 1920’s he also wrote novels and short stories and translated into Hungarian works by Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, Thornton Wilder, and Oscar Wilde among others. The 5,000 forint coin was designed by István Holló. The 5,000 forint coin was designed by István Holló. It measures 38.61 mm in diameter, with weight and purity identical to the above. Mintage and pricing are the same as for the National Park coin: 5,000 proof coins at $67.50 each and 3,000 brilliant uncirculated for $62.50 each.
