Hungarian Journal Another month of daylight? Clocks will go cuckoo! WASHINGTON - The clock is ticking on a new Y2K-style techno scare in 2007 - thanks to Congress. That’s because legislators slipped a measure into the energy bill that President Bush is set to sign today extending Daylight Savings Time by four weeks - a change-up that machines already programmed for the annual hour jump may not be prepared to cope with.-Daylight Savings Time would start three weeks earlier in the spring and last one week longer in the fall. Daylight time was first enacted in Germany in 1915, quickly followed by Britain and much of Europe and Canada. Because the sun shone for a time while most people were asleep, it was reasoned that light could be better used during the day. The solution was to push the clocks ahead one hour in springtime, forcing people to wake an hour earlier. They would therefore expend less energy trying to light their homes, for instance, if time were adjusted to suit their daily patterns. When the days started getting shorter in the fall and people awoke to increasing darkness, the clocks were turned back an hour to get more light in the morning. Although first instituted in 1915, the idea of daylight time had been batted around for more than a century. Benjamin Franklin suggested the idea more than once in the 1770s while he was a minister to France. But it wasn’t until more than a century later that the idea of daylight time was taken seriously. William Willett, an English writer revived the idea in 1907, and eight years later Germany was the first nation to adopt daylight time. The reason: energy conservation. Britain quickly followed suit and instituted British Summer Time in 1916. Several areas, including parts of Europe, Canada and the U.S., followed suit during the First World War. In most cases daylight time ended with the armistice. During the Second World War, a different form of daylight time was reinstated by Britain and clocks were set two hours ahead of GMT during the summer. It was known as Double Summer Time. The time shift didn’t end with the summer, as clocks were rolled back to be one hour ahead of GMT through the winter. The Uniform Time Act, enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1966, established a system of uniform (within each time zone) daylight time throughout most of the U.S. and its possessions, exempting only those states in which the legislatures voted to keep the entire state on standard time. Encounters Protesters More than 500 performers came from Beijing. They sang and danced on Hollywood Blvd., inviting people to Beijing to visit the Olympic Games. But the scene also had several hundred protesters holding various signs protesting the Chinese government’s persecution of human rights. The parade was held in front of Grauman’s Chinese theater in Hollywood. A group of children dressed as prosperity dolls danced and sang a welcome song composed for Los Angeles. Also, there were beautiful women dressed in Forbidden City clothing, flower drum team neatly lined up, stilts team teasing the audience, as well as decorated floats and other performance groups. They also wished the audience a happy new year. American Visual Artists Guild representative Ann Lau said that they are protesting L.A. She said that closing the streets, having police for security, promotion by the Los Angeles Visitors Bureau, are all using taxpayers’ resources. Let's Abolish Daylight Savings Time! Justice For All? Baloney! For instance, let’s take a look at the poor confused Rooster. Excuse me, but hasn’t the Rooster suffered long enough! Isn’t it bad enough that the Rooster on a daily basis has to deal with the fact that it is one of the weirdest-looking, not to mention, most irritating animals on the planet? I really think that the Rooster deserves a break and I have a wonderful idea. Humans, let’s all get together and abolish Daylight Savings Time for the Rooster! I mean, who cares if Daylight Savings Time saves energy and gives us an extra hour of sunlight during the summer months. So what! Daylight Savings Time is sick and cruel to the Rooster! Did you know that it takes the average Rooster a couple of weeks to adapt to the time change caused by Daylight Savings Time? This can really mess up a Rooster’s cawk-a-doodle-do. And what about the poor Roosters who have sleep disorders. Do you think turning up a clock, then turning it back is good for them? Hell, no! Rooster’s who have sleep disorders need regularity and all the sleep they can get! If you don’t want to abolish Daylight Savings Time for yourself, that’s okay. You should not be doing it for yourself anyway. Do it for the right reason. Abolish Daylight Savings Time for the Rooster. Cawk-a-doodle-do! By Tina Peden, 2005 (Now with the extra three weeks of Daylight Savings Time, the poor rooster’s biological clock must be really messed up! - the Editor.)
