MEDITATIONS Rev. Bela D. Bonis Ph.D. Emer.Prof.of Philosophy Calif. State University, Long Beach (CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK) IN THE PREVIOUS medita­tion you were asked: what would you call Jesus. Present­ly, however, I’d like to examine the claims Jesus made for him­self. A name Jesus gave him­self you find in John 8:12: "I am the light of the world." This saying of Jesus follows immedi­ately after the story of the woman whom Jesus had res­cued from her accusers, and had sent away with the kindly admonition to "go and sin no more." It is as if this Gospel would have us realize that the darkness illustrated the dark­ness from which Jesus would deliver all mankind. That dark­ness is of two kinds. One is the darkness in which the woman had been living, the pathetic, helpless sort of darkness in which people find themselves as they slip, almost without knowing it, into the lesser and lower way of life. The other is the darkness which marked the lives of this woman’s accusers. They were, doubtless, pious, respectable, "church-going" people, with much of good about them. But from their lives, through pride or dullness, all compassion for others had been crowded out. (To think about: If this woman had violated the 7th command­ment, what commandment had her accusers have violated?) Perhaps no sentence in the Gospels can better suggest what dignity and responsibility reside in being truly Christian. For in one instance, as above, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world"; and in Matth. 5:14 He lifts his followers up to the same level with himself by tell­ing them, "Ye are the light of the world." Here, then, we may well remind ourselves that no earthly light is original, that all light, all energy, come from another world - the sun. So, while we may rejoice in the proud privilege of being lightbearers wherever there is darkness in the world, our light comes really from Him who is the light of the world. Bible reading, prayer, public worhsip, the association of Christian friends, mission dare not be neglected, for your light will burn only as long as we do not break connection with Him who is the source of spiritual light and power. Parliament Elects Hajdú as ORTT President Budapest, March 10 (MTI) - Parliament elected István Hajdú, former President of Hungarian Radio Rt., as President of the Na­tional Radio and Television Board, with an overwhelming majority. President Ferenc Madl and Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy earlier agreed about nominating the candidate to the post. Television Board Presidium Election - Fidesz, HDF Reactions (MTI) - The larger opposition party, Fidesz, will not withdraw cooperation from the opposition Forum party for nominating mem­bers to the presidium of Hungarian Television's supervisory board, Fidesz deputy parliamentary group leader Zoltán Pokomi told re­porters in Budapest on Monday. The Hungarian Democratic Forum had maneuvered itself into a difficult situation, said Pokomi. Nevertheless, Fidesz considered the HDF as its ally, he added. The HDF nominated a further two members to the Hungarian Television Public Foundation Board Presidium to prevent the two ruling parties from imposing their will in the board, HDF Chair Ibolya David told reporters in Parliament on Monday. David was speaking after Parliament had elected the HDF's two candidates, thus completing the 8-member board presidium, after Fidesz refused to nominate candidates. Fidesz Walk-Out Over Television Board Election (MTI) - The larger of the two opposition parties, Fidesz, walked out of Parliament's Monday session ahead of MPs electing two op­position Forum members to complete the presidium of the Hungar­ian Television supervisory board. Before walking out of the session, Fidesz MP Antal Rogan proposed that the two new candidates nominated by the smaller opposition party, the Hungarian Demo­cratic Forum (HDF), should not be put up for the vote. Fidesz con­siders the nomination procedure unlawful. Fidesz MPs left the session after their motion failed to get enough support. As reported, the two opposition parties failed to reach an agreement on how the four opposition places in the Hun­garian Television Board presidium should be distributed. Fidesz re­fused nominate any candidates, and Parliament elected two HDF members to the presidium last week. It has now elected another two HDF members to the presidium, completing the presidium. (The presidium now has four opposition and four government-party members.) Parliament Approves New Agricultural Market Regulations (MTI) - Hungarian Parliament on Monday approved the bill on the new agricultural market regulations. The bill aims to bring the Hungarian agricultural economy in line with European Union regulations. The new law mainly serves market stability, predictability and producer income security. For example, customers must pay for products within 30 days and re­tailers cannot sell a product for the wholesale price. French IT Minister in Budapest Budapest (MTI) - French Minister for Research and New Tech­nologies Claudie Haignere arrived in Budapest for an official visit on Monday. The French minister held talks with Hungarian Minister of Edu­cation Balint Magyar, then delivered a lecture in the French Insti­tute in Budapest. Haignere and Magyar discussed biotechnology and information technology cooperation, the prospects of Hungarian-French scien­tific cooperation and several concrete issues of continuing the on­going joint scientific and inter-university programmes, the French minister said at a press conference in the French Institute. Claudie Haignere, the first French astronaut, has a medical de­gree and carried out medical experiments on the Mir space station in 1996 and then on the ISS international space station. Answering a question about the Columbia disaster after her lecture in the Institute, Haignere said astronauts must practice to perfection many responses to a multitude of extreme events, and they also calculate with the risk to their lives. Talk of terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and war, have made the artist anxious, disturbed. For those who share her sentiments, and seek to soothe their emotions, the Monrovia resident has selected a special cross section of paintings-spanning some 20 years- for a free exhibit titled, “The Gifts of Peace.” The seven-piece exhibit, part of a larger collection of abstract acrylic paintings with figurative elements, is on display at Mon­rovia-based Mystic Sisters. “ No matter what happens, you still should work to keep your inner peace and harmony.” said Dobay, 65. “ The present conflict is a nightmare to me. I wish I could wake up, as 1 am sure most Americans do, but I hope people will get an inner strength from my work and have a feeling that they are not alone.” The paintings, mostly in pastel shades, possess a light and airy quality. Dobay said the work symbolize peace, tranquility and inner harmony. At the gallery, a butterfly - with psychedelic characteris­tics - sits on a canvas background of colorful swirls. Across from it, a single swan basks in a world of geometric shapes and pastel squiggles, resembling lines of distortion on a tele­vision set. The swan represents the peace we should be reaching for, “she said. “1 think spiritually and mind-wise we are much behind and it’s dangerous when society doesn’t grow with technology.
