"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matth. 10:34) Jesus told his disciples, twelve fresh recruits who, on hearing that, must have wondered what they were getting into. Jesus would later rebuke Peter for wielding a literal sword (John 18:10), and by that time, all twelve must have had at least a hint of the broader scope of Jesus’ words. For the main import of these words is not literal. There is no justification here for the war method - not while the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus remains. (Matth. 5:1-12) Luke’s version of the word "sword" gives us a more comprehensive meaning: "Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth. I tell you, Nay: but rather division." The pain and sorrow of Jesus in this passage (Luke 12:49-53) is obvious. He knows that what is to come is inevitable, that the working out of God’s purpose will be humanly costly as men and women make their decision for or against truth. And this adds to Jesus’ own sense of apprehension and desolation, so revolutionary was his talk about baptism. Jesus was consciously echoing the teaching of John the Baptist (Matth. 3:11-15). John had prophesied the coming of one who should baptize with the fire of the divine judgment; it had never occurred to him that the Coming One might be the first to indergo that baptism. The words of Jesus about the divisions in individual families remind us of something often conveniently forgotten in Christian thinking: that, wherever the struggle for love goes on, side by side with it we will find hatred coming out into the open. Too, I think the most painful division Christ brings is at times that which occurs within ourselves, as our "new man" struggles with our "old man." Alas, looking back over two millenia of Christian history, one sees much evidence of disruption caused not just by Jesus’ message but also by his followers. At this very moment war sabers are rattling, the land of Jesus’ birth convulses and bleeds, and the worldwide church shows more division than unity. But the same Jesus who said we would experience divisions in this world, also said: "Be of good cheer. I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) POLITICALLY ON THE PERIPHERY László Tőkés on his lost case, on the benefit law, and about the position of RMDSZ (MNO) The Hungarian Democratic Union in Romania (RMDSZ) holds its congress between January 31 and February 2. Probably it will be discussed whether László Tőkés, Honorary Chairman of RMDSZ - who lost his case against the party - will keep his post or not. It is not sure László Tőkés, Bishop of the Reformed Church will be present as at the same time in the same town, in Szatmárnémeti the church district holds its extraordinary public convention in Láncos church on February 1. Apart from the unstable position of the benefit law it is a great question where the RMDSZ will be heading. The interview with Bishop Tőkés was made by István Stefka. The Bishop of the Reformed Church in Romania tells about his lawsuit against RMDSZ to try to restore the democratic institutions of the party but this attempt failed. Béla Markó, Chairman of RMDSZ stated that Bishop Tőkés caused a great moral damage to all the Hungarians with this lawsuit while Mr Tőkés claims that RMDSZ which is an ally of the Romanian post-communists stands closer to the Iliescu regime than any other Romanian political party. Though Béla Markó sticks to the benefit law accepted by the Orbán-Nastase pact, his policy serves the interests of Adrian Nastase and Péter Medgyessy who will be present at the congress of RMDSZ. Bishop Tőkés finds the judgement illegal and partisan so he has not decided if he takes part in the work of the congress or not. He feels he is politically on the periphery as Premier Medgyessy would not see him and the Romanian Prime Minister called on RMDSZ to get rid of him. Bishop Tőkés has convened the extraordinary assembly of his church district because the Hungarian nation is in a great crisis. It will not be a ’counter-congress’, this will be a value-oriented assembly. Bishop Tőkés quoted the teaching of Moses: ’Now choose life, so that you and your children may live...’ World War II Memorial Sites in Don Bend - Education Minister MOSCOW (MTI) - A military cemetery is planned this year along Russia’s Don River Bend at Rudkino, Minister of Education Balint Magyar told MTI in Voronezh. The Hungarian government will offer HUF 10m to have the WW2 Soviet military graves in Voronezh put in order, a gesture aimed at promoting the earliest possible inauguration of the Hungarian military cemetery in Rudkino. Residents of Voronezh who have come out against the Hungarian memorial site argue that Soviet soldiers who lost their lives during the war do not yet have a dignified resting place. Minister of Education Magyar met up with a group of 15 Hungarian secondary-level students and their five teachers on a study trip in Voronezh. The students visited the memorial sites with Hungarian connections on the 60th anniversary of the Don breakthrough, as participants in the Education Ministry’s recently set-up National Remembrance Program. (Soviet troops broke the lines of the Second Hungarian Army 60 years ago, causing serious losses to Hungarian forces.) Magyar also met the governor of the Voronezh area, Vladimir Kulakov. Speaking after their talks, Magyar said the Rudkino memorial site could open this year, possibly together with the Soviet military cemetery in question. Memorial plaques already bear the names of more than 10,000 Hungarian soldiers who lost their lives during combat at the Don Bend. A small museum has also been opened as a result of cooperation between the Voyenniye Memorali, the caretaker for military cemeteries in Russia, and the Budapest Museum of Military History. Under the terms of an agreement between the two countries, the Hungarian side would pay for both the maintenance of Soviet military graves in Hungary, and the creation and maintenance of Hungarian cemeteries and memorial sites in Russia. He said the Foundation would be able to share in the royalties from the proposed film version of the Kertesz novel in proportion to the support it provided. Government to Support Film Version of Kertesz Novel (MTI) The government will provide funding of HUF 1 billion to the Hungarian Motion Picture Foundation, government spokesman Zoltán Gal told reporters at a press briefing following the cabinet’s session in Budapest. Support for the film version of Hungarian Nobel Prize winning writer Imre Kertesz's novel “Fateless”, is also being recommended, said Gal. The Hungarian Motion Picture Foundation would provide the professional framework for filmmakers to take appropriate decisions, he added. Former Finance Minister Bokros Calls for Urgent Measures BUDAPEST (MTI) - Former Finance Minister Lajos Bokros on Friday warned urgent measures were necessary to cut the government deficit and reverse over-spending. Bokros, who as finance minister in 1995-6 had introduced an austerity package, added restrictions similar his 1995 stabilisation measures were unnecessary, however. Now a director at the World Bank, Bokros held a lecture as guest of the Hozam Klub (Yield Club) Kecskemet on Friday. Hungary's economy today could not at all be compared to 1995-6, he said, when the country came close to bankruptcy. The National Bank of Hungary cannot halt the deterioration in the balance, cut the general government budget deficit and stop the outflow of wages, out of proportion to productivity gains, he said. If the central bank were to unilaterally cut interest rates dramatically while the budget over-spending and wage outflow remained, then the external balance could also be in danger, the former finance minister added. SZÁSZ: NO INVESTIGATION (MN) Investigation has stopped in the case of András Szász, entrepreneur closely attached to the Hungarian Socialist Party charged with fraud. Mr György Bárándy, Szász’s lawyer did not wish to confirm or refute this piece of information. Mr. Lajos Németh, deputy manager of communication of ORFK said Mr. Szász is wanted by the Interpol. The Nádor Company headed by Mr. Szász was commissioned by the secret services during the Horn government to provide secret service equipment from a loan by the Bank of Commerce and Credit (K&H) in the value of 33 million dollars, of which 12 million ’disappeared’.
