AMERICAN Hungarian Journal MEDITATIONS ************************* Tibor Farkas by Dr. Bela Bonis Pastor (562) 430-0876 First Hungarian Reformed Church, Hawthorne INSTEAD OF perpetuating a world of violence, Isaiah proposes a vision that demands another reality that requires peace making: doing good, seeking justice, rescuing the oppressed, defending the orphan and pleading for the widow (Isa. 1:17-18). Curiously, however, what the widow in the Luke parable (18:1-8) wants from the judge is vengeance or vindication. True, some have translated the original into something more polite such as "give the verdict to my side" or "give me justice." Well, it is true the widow wanted justice done, and to her benefit. But it seems she wanted more. She wanted to be avenged. She was vindictive. Christians believe that to the extent that vindication or vengeance is necessary, it is the Lord’s to provide (Deut. 32:35). We want to let that to be our final word on the matter: vengeance is the Lord’s, and although not pretty, at least in reference to the Holy God, it befits God’s nature, working its way out to final payment. The widow, however, wants to feel the satisfaction of vengeance herself. And it is the feeling, the passion of it, that constitutes the heart of the matter in this passage. She wants to experience the feeling of righteous triumph or perhaps just plain delicious gloating. She wanted partiality to her side and in the end ehe provoked the judge to comply - for she bothered him. Does God take sides? Jesus himself asks, "Will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you he will vindicate them speedily." If we believe, as we have good reason to, that God’s justice is preferentially directed to the poor, then^this little story suggests that God is at least as passionate as the pestered judge. So keep praying and do not lose heart. Yes, we lose heart when we believe that no one cares for us, that no one is on our side taking our needs to heart or loving us for who we are and what we have experienced. What we expect from God, which we do not expect from the judge, is a passion with us. We expect compassion. The incarnation is precisely about how the Judge became the Friend, how God took our side stood with us and finally with us. And the heart of God, whose preference is for all of us in our mortality, and our various poverties, hears our cry for vindication and come close by, speedily. MIKLÓS SZENTKIRÁLYI -A MISSIONARY AT 91! • The Hungarian people of the Los Angeles area will be proud to hear about the extraordinary life of one of their own. The story of Miklós Szentkirályi began to unfold when Fr. David Ayotte gave his sermon in the Holy Family Cathedral of Orange on the twenty first of July. Fr. Ayotte used Miklós as an example of how one can dedicate his life to the mission of the Church even after retirement, considered by most as too late for such a challenge, difficult for even a much younger man. But not for Miklós Szentkirályi. After contacting the gracious LMH Coordinator Janice England at the Los Angeles Diocese’ Lay Mission Helpers mission house, she told me that luckily Miklós is on his way back from Hungary to L.A. on his way to his mission in Micronesia, on the island of Pohnpei were he has been a missionary since 1975. Fortunate again, Miklós consented to a telephone interview on the third of August, just prior to his departure for the islands. Miklós came directly to Los Angeles after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and within a short time was hired by Transamerica’s Occidental Insurance Company. His qualifications must have impressed Occidental Management to get him hired so quickly. Miklós was born in 1911, (at the time of this writing he is 91 years old and fully active as a missionary, which alone is an admirable accomplishment). He completed his university training in Agriculture and also obtained a Doctorate in Economics in Budapest. His education and employment as First Secretary of the Economic Research Institute prior to the Second World War, were considered more than sufficient for the communist government to put him in prison for two and a half years for being a spy (1949-1951, including five months in solitary confinement) in Kistarcsa, one of the many dreaded prison camps in Hungary. Soon after the fall of Budapest to the Russian tanks Miklós left Hungary as a free man, thankful to God for his liberation, and along with tens of thousands of his countrymen he came to the U.S. to make up for lost freedom and time. At Occidental Miklós advanced into management until his retirement in 1974.* He had heard about the Mission Helpers Association and signed up for a nine-month course which qualified him to join. In 1975 he left for the island world of Micronesia where he stayed on the island of Pohnpei ever since. Having been educated in agriculture and having a keen economic sense. Miklós has taught over nine hundred students in sorely needed skills at the local Agricultural Trade School as well as created'a thriving business of raising hogs, a favorite staple of the islanders, to support the mission. In his typical shy manner he confessed that the business sometimes brings in up to fifteen thousand dollars to the aid of the mission. With the Franciscan brothers nearby he finds the island life both challenging and intellectually satisfying. After twenty seven years in Pohnpei I wondered how he was able to keep his Hungarian so accent free and rich in expression. Well, as it turned out, Miklós has been visiting Hungary every three years sinse 1989 and yearly in the past four years. His family is originally from Transylvania, but most of them have, over the past decades, moved to Budapest where he now has an army of brothers, sisters and their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren to visit, which he admits he thoroughly enjoys every year. His trips to Hungary bring him to Los Angeles where he gets a physical checkup and renews his contract with the Mission every three years. Miklós considers himself a very blessed man to have had the opportunity to serve God and his Church for such an extraordinarily long time. At 91, he is still active, healthy, though, as he says, a bit slower than he used to be. His brothers and sisters in the Hungarian communities of Los Angeles wish him God’s rich blessings for many more years to come. MIKLÓS can be reached via e-mail: miklos@maiI.fm , or you can reach Janice England LMH Coordinator, Mission Office at (213) 637-7222 in Los Angeles. It happened 30 years ago this week: Terrorism at the Munich Olympics September has always been a favorite with terrorists, only we didn’t know it then. On September 5, 1972, a group of Black September commandos broke into the apartments housing the Israeli Olympic team, killed 2 of them at once, and died with the rest of them after 21 hours of efforts to resolve the situation. Did it foreshadow September 11, 2001? Its televised unfolding definitely did, and we learned (but forgot) that terrorists work with dogged determination for years, never giving up their goal.
