AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Göncz Defends Hungarian Economy DAVOS, Switzerland - At the 25th World Economic Forum, Árpád Göncz, President of the Republic of Hungary, started his speech in defense of the Hungarian economy with an interesting analogy, referring to admission into the EU: "Europeans in vastly differing situations... I believe we may justly consider ourselves the passengers of Noah’s Ark. ... We did not board the Ark at the same time. Noah called to the Lord’s favourites first, but laid everyone else’s mind at rest that there would be a place for them too on board... if nowhere else, at least on the upper deck. So even today, there are some wondering whether the land the ark is approaching will provide sustenance or doom them to serve as prey to others, as is customary in nature. This is precisely what ensures stability on land, together with democracy. The fact that, one way or another, everyone forms part of the food chain. Something that the wise and farsighted Noah knew full well, that is why he ushered us all on board the ark." Mr. Göncz, together with Austrian President Klestil, Czech Prime Minister Klaus, Kolodko of Poland, and George Soros, participated in a public debate. From the fact that Hungarian economy showed a 4 percent growth last year, he surmised that the country has reached the threshold of modernization, a process which has always been and remains a costly one. Mr. Göncz believes the budget shortage derives from amounts that failed to flow into the treasury because of sanctions regarding Yugoslavia. The President pointed out that competitiveness is less and less an economic phenomenon, as countries whose economic ac-George Strem is 95! The Journal’s much appreciated contributor, Mr. George Strem celebrated his 95th birthday in the company of friends and family in Tarzana. The two economic halves of Europe are afflicted by the same ailment, whose symptoms are: unemployment, the crisis of the formerly constructed social welfare state, the increasing indebtedness, the ageing of society, and the poor performance in international competitiveness. A new strategy of European development might provide an answer, together with a society adapting with flexibility to this changing strategy. In this respect, it is well worth comparing Central and Eastern Europe, greatly divested of hope and self-confidence, with Western Europe putting on the airs of a strict schoolmaster. It became evident that the flexibility of the schoolmaster’s society pales in comparison with ours. Western societies have not been obliged to cope with the task of simultaneous political stabilization and economic transformation within an incredibly short period of time and amid unbelievably harsh external economic conditions. Nothing but successful modernization will be able to sustain the speed, the favourable direction and the social backing of what still lies ahead - said Mr. Göncz, and he went on to list all the figures that show the signs of a successful economic transformation in Hungary. He stressed that "Hungary has always paid and will continue to pay its debts." In conclusion, the Hungarian President pointed out that to facilitate Hungary’s accession to the European Union "is not only in our interest, but in the best interest of the whole region and the EU as well." Pastor Dr. Béla Bónis, (310) 430-0876; Caretaker Dr. Béla Bíró, (310) 597-7459 The sermon’s text was Jeremiah 1:4-10 and Luke 4:21-30. When Jeremiah received his call to be a prophet, the Lord told him not to be afraid of his mission to the people and the rulers of Israel. He still remained a reluctant prophet fully aware of the costs of his calling. In the end and in terrible vicissitudes he had to help Israel survive as a people even without nationhood. According to Luke, Jesus began his public ministry with the announcement to the people at a synagogue in Nazareth that Isaiah’s promises of good news for the poor, release for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind have been fulfilled in their hearing. Ultimately they were not ready to listen to a genuine prophet who would remind them they had strayed so far from the covenant that they needed to re-enter it as fresh converts. We too need a prophet, someone who will call us to a fundamental reorientation of individual and national priorities. We too are content with external reforms and not ready to confront the darkness in our own character. We want a future based on familiar premises even if they are no longer working. It is increasingly obvious that, first, we cannot build an orderly society when there is disorder in our souls. Second, a political culture cannot survive apart from a moral one that nourishes the values that made it possible. And third, these values are shaped in stable families where children are initiated into the love of the Lord and into the civilized traditions of the human race. But a civilization gone astray can repent only in the measure that its people repent - individually, personally. So, you see, this is really your problem first of all, and mine. May God help us all in that! On FEBRUARY 19 at the 11 a.m. service we install Dr. Carmen Castillo-Roft as "presbyter" and prayerfully recommission those who continue in their offices. We also commemorate, as an exemplary servant of our church, John Cariaga who died 6 years ago. A reception by his loved ones will follow. On FEBRUARY 26, we observe the Lord’s Supper. After that we’ll have a "Friendship Hour". Dr. Béla Bíró will talk about his recent trip to Hungary. Plan to come. Key Hungarian Official Calls It Quits Hungarian Finance Minister László Békési announced his resignation effective March 1st. According to Hungarian press reports, former communist deputy Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy might replace Békési who says he is leaving because of fundamental differences over economic policy, especially in privatization. Prime Minister Gyula Horn wants to create a ministry in charge of privatization. That would undercut Békési, who also opposed Horn’s decision to renegotiate the HungarHotels deal and publicly supported Privatization Commissioner Ferenc Bartha, who was fired by Horn. Békési is the architect of the government’s austerity economic program which calls for slashing government spending and speeding up privatization. Horn says the government remains committed to these goals. Political analysts say that is probably true, although the Socialists’ coalition partners, the Free Democrats are worried about Békesi’s resignation. The Free Democrats want assurances that Békesi’s austerity program will be continued, but it is unlikely they will leave the coalition. Ingatlan ügyeit magyarul intézi: ROSENBERG GABOR Realtor Ass.
