AMERICAN Hungarian Journal FIRST HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH 12717 York Ave., Hawthorne, CA 90250 Ph. (310) 355-1475 Adm. Pastor Dr. Béla Bonis, (310) 430-0876; Caretaker Dr. Béla Bíró, (310) 597-7459 At the 11 a.m. worship service, Dr. Bonis’ interesting question was: Why are we children of God: by adoption, according to the New Testament? Why aren’t we, by nature, children of the universe and at home in the cosmos? After all, we are made of the very stuff of the cosmos! Why are we made to think of ourselves as estranged from natural life? I. John 3:1 provides a cogent explanation. "The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him." Our world is an order of existence alienated from God and alienating us from each other. In a sense, the world is a "Domination System". Whether its beneficiaries or its victims, we lost our connection as children to God. But thanks to the gospel of God’s dominationfree order, we have been set free and restored to our primordial relationship with God and joyfully shout: "See what love our Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are." Indeed, one of the most pregnant statements in all Scripture is John 3:2: "Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when He is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see Him as He is." This verse lies at the heart of whatever is most true in the doctrine of the Second Coming. Jesus revealed to us what it means to be fully human, fully alive, fully empowered by God, fully conscious of the delusions of the Domination System, with which our Lord refused to collude in all its forms. He declared himself in solidarity with the victims of all kinds of oppression; He was able to do all of this because of the immediacy of His relationship with God. May our relationship with Him remain unbroken all through 1995, too. We are grateful to the following pastors for their participation in the 4 p.m. ecumenical New Year’s worship in our church: Rev. Sándor Babos, Rev. József Rettig Hermann, Rev. Bálint Nagy, Rev. Sándor Szabó and Rev. Bertalan Négyessy. Many thanks to the visiting members of their congregations, and to the ladies of the First Hungarian Feformed Church who served refreshments after the service. Dr. Bonis preached the sermon on this special occasion to recommit ourselves to God’s service in 1995. Claes Grants Interview on Expanding NATO BRUSSELS - It is inconceivable for any country to be admitted a new member of the European Union in the future without that going hand in hand with NATO membership - NATO Secretary General Willy Claes said in an interview he granted to MTI and Hungarian Television recently. Claes recalled that the European Union was striving to shape a defence policy of its own, one of whose key elements would be the West European Union. "I continue to be optimistic and I hope that Moscow will soon be ready to accept the two documents on the table (the basic principles and the programs of cooperation between NATO and Russia, rejected by Russian foreign minister Kozyrev in early December owing to the intention to ’hurriedly expand the organization’)" - said Claes. He confirmed that the Alliance did not seek to isolate Russia; quite the contrary, Brussels seeks to develop a European security structure in which Russia is a close and cooperative partner. It is certain, the secretary general pointed out, that NATO cannot give a right of veto to anyone. "Not even the tough speech delivered by President Yeltsin in Budapest has deterred us from granting a mandate of a permanent ambassador’s council for implementing the resolution of December 1 (passed on a process aimed at sizing up the expansion of NATO inside)" - Claes pointed out. However, he added, under provision five of the Washington Treaty granting collective security guarantees, a future expansion "would entail serious military, political, and even budgetary consequences for the present member countries." "It is logical of us to expect of the would-be new member countries to meet the obligations that the present 16 member states have already undertaken." Claes said the North Atlantic Council would decide on admitting new members with a show of hands, and this will be unequivocally a "political decision". Oops! The Price Just ______Went Up______ The Hungarian State Holding Company has changed its previous decision in the privatization of HungarHotels, a chain of 14 hotels that were about to go into the possession of AGH (American General Hospitality) for $57.5 million. The State Holding Company wishes to raise the price to $67 million, which would include the Budapest Hotel, worth 9 million, previously designated to be left out of the deal. The SHC was acting on the government’s orders to try to get , the best possible price. The government was asked not to debate the matter on January 12 but give it more time. English Page by SUSAN JANCSO The Budapest representative of AGH is awaiting the official notice, in order to notify the American firm of the changed conditions. The reaction to the new offer will probably be quick, but it is hard to guess what it will be. For one thing, the buyer needs to find out whether the SHC is authorized to present the offer. After all, they did change their mind before regarding a deal they had already said yes to... Hungary Buying Weapons from Romania? Hungary denies to have the intention of buying weapons and parts from Romania. According to Romanian press sources, Hungary is most interested in the latest models of military trucks made in Brassó. The four-wheeldrive, 3.5 ton vehicle, equipped with a Euro-1 engine, is presently the only one manufactured in the former Warsaw-Pact countries acceptable by NATO standards. Other items of interest are said to be 105 millimeter projectiles, shock-absorbers for tanks, other engines and 14.5 millimeter machine guns. The cooperation would boost the Romanian military industry that has been struggling to stay in business for years. According to the spokesman of the Ministry of Defense, Hungary bought 12 JAK-52 training airplanes from Romania last year, but has no other plans to buy military equipment from its neighbor. An Oscar in Chess to the Polgar Family The highest honor of chess players was granted to Hungary for the second time. In 1988, Judith Polgar won the prestigeous award, and now the three sisters, Zsuzsa, Judit and Zsófia received the cup jointly. The justification includes, beyond recent victories, their life’s achievement. It is interesting to know that some of the famous sisters victories were in championships designed for men.
