AMERICAN Hungarian Journal HUNGARIAN CABARET In the Best of Traditions Sunday afternoon at the OMNI Hilton Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, the popular entertainer IVAN HECZEY held his 1995 Show entitled "Whatever You Like". In spite of several other Hungarian events crowded unto that same weekend, the auditorium was filled to capacity with Mr. Heczey’s enthusiastic audience, and they were not disappointed: as the title promised, everyone could find what he or she wanted, and everyone took home something precious in his or her heart: a lovely melody by Walter Jurmann, a funny song once sung by... whoever it was, back in Hungary, so many years ago... or the punchline of a joke. The main strength of the program were the excellent singers. Livia Dóra had captured the audience right at the beginning with two Jurmann-songs sung in German - which comes easily to Livia, since German is her native tongue (Schade, Eine Spanishe Tango). One lady in the audience was especially happy: Yvonne Jurmann, the Hungarian-born widow of the composer, who seemed to enjoy every minute of the performance. Elizabeth Kiss is a fabulouslooking young lady with a fantastic coloratura voice. She returned several times - naturally, every time in a different outfit - and even for a duet with the male star of the show, the famous Franz Liszt’s great-grandson, Richard Liszt. Liszt has an endearing smile and a beautiful, warm tenor voice, with a little uncertainty at the top notes when at full force, but wonderful pianissimos, such as the one at the end of "Without a Song", which was also one of Mario Lanza’s favourites. Also, he has a good repertory from "La donna é mobile" to "Granada", from Viennese operetta to Italian songs. Tibor Varga also won the hearts of the audience with a great oldie, "Doktor úr" (it would We are looking for co-workers experienced in TEXTILE manufacturing, possibly with Hungarian diploma. Maria Cser outdid herself again - where does she find the funniest dittys every time, ones we all remember from way back? But I think that’s Ivan Heczey’s secret too: he can always turn up the kind of songs that evoke memories and ring bells in everybody’s heart... so each and every person in the audience - including you - can find "whatever you like". Maria Cser, Enikő Oss and Emőke Hrotkó were very good in their speaking roles; Kati Vásárhelyi also contributed to "Round of Calls" (although I do believe four women were superfluous - Ivan does it better all by himself). Let us not forget the two truly excellent musicians, László Cser and Lajos Kabók, who also had their share of the limelight, and Csaba Hrotkó (between two flights, since he is a purser with TWA) in "With or Without Music". Sándor Szoboszlay and Amy Bognár added their usual silent contributions (stage and makeup). And Ivan Heczey was funny and on top of every situation (like when a recent arrival from Budapest kindly provided the punchline for his opening joke...). It was a good show, a great entertainment, too bad that it only happens once a year! -sj-Dr. Béla Bonis’ speech at the consecration of Grace Hungarian Reformed Church’s new church building: I’d like to congratulate this church and its minister for the cross that is the basic symbolic motif, representing the incarnate love of God in Jesus Christ, his passion and his resurrection. It is quite an innovative symbol for a Hungarian Reformed Church. All of us know that the 16th century Reformation shattered the synthesis of art and Christianity and undermined the Christian confidence in symbols as reliable ways of embodying or stating Christian truth. Gradually, however, Protestants began to appreciate what they had so deliberately and consistently rejected. During the late 19th and early 20lh centuries, various movements emerged to reform and reshape the Protestant understanding of imagery and symbolism in the Christian faith. That cross... should have an emotive, evocative character, suggesting the vitality of the mission of Grace Hungarian Reformed Church in Reseda. Ironically, the church’s ability to communicate and educate through images and symbols has been largely surrendered to the economic sphere. Attempts such as putting a cross on your steeple may be a partial means of recovering symbolism, mystery, and beauty in the church’s worship and educational ministry. God bless you as you use the cross for the upbuilding of your church and the faith of its members. Pastor Dr. Béla Bónis, (310) 430-0876; Caretaker: Dr. Béla Bíró, (310) 597-7459 Sometimes Jesus tells us stories in order to encourage us as in our text: Mark 4:26-34. Allow it to lie secretly in the ground. Surprise! A tiny mustard seed sprouts and becomes a glorious shrub, a shrub so tall that even birds can perch on its branches. Here is a story told not only for the church’s encouragement but also for our rebuke. The church is impaired, the kingdom is endangered, not by the world’s continuing criticism of it as ineffective and insignificant. The church is endangered when we are tempted to derive our status from those forms of power and significance that the world values with its slogan, "bigger is better." Who is doing the most significant work, the penniless young nun laboring under Mother Teresa to care for Calcutta’s destitute dying, or the recent engineering graduate, making a six-figure income for designing new and more violent video games? This little parable of the mustard seed, whatever else it may be, is a reminder that Jesus found quality to be more important than quantity. His comment on the widow’s small offering is case in point. Jesus rebukes the hypocrisy of our posturing about structural, political and social change which costs us nothing personally. He rebukes the person who refuses to give up a Saturday to work on the Habitat for Humanity house because "we ought to be changing housing laws rather than building houses for the poor one at a time." The Lord of the harvest gives growth, though not always the growth we expect, and there will be harvest, though not always at the times or in the mode for which we plan. OCTOBER 1: World-wide Communion Sunday when we, too, will observe it. OCTOBER 15: our annual bazaar, a festival of joyous gettogether to enjoy a rich program. Let us all come and invite our friends, too. SEPTEMBER 17: the consecration of the new church building of Grace Hungarian Reformed Church in Reseda was a glorious occasion to express the prayerful best wishes and hearty congratulations of our church, too. SEPTEMBER 19: the monthly pastors’ conference was glad to hear the Rev. Szabolcs Kálmán’s inspirational talk and the discussion that followed.
