AMERICAN Hungarian Journal __________Special Report_________ Message from the Governor’s Crime Summit: "Zero Tolerance" for Hate Crimes! By Dr. Frank De Balogh Governor Pete Wilson recently held a crime summit meeting of California’s top political and community leaders in Los Angeles. An important event of the crime summit was the Governor’s dinner at the Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance to address the growing problem of "hate crimes" in California. It provided a forum for the state’s leaders to share their views of the problem and also their solutions. The select audience of about 100 - a mix of law enforcement, elected officials, minority community and ethnic leaders - was there at the personal invitation of the Governor. The American Hungarian community was represented by Rev. Bálint Nagy, pastor of the Grace Hungarian Reformed Church of Reseda, and myself. We were invited because the three arson attacks that burned his church constitute a particularly vicious and visible hate crime which has received widespread publicity and attention at all levels of government. The dinner began with a welcome by Rabbi Marvin Hier, Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Mayor Richard Riordan followed, stressing that public safety and the fight against crime were his top priorities. The main speaker of the evening, Governor Pete Wilson, began forcefully by declaring that California is in the forefront of the fight against hatred and bigotry. He emphasized that only when California is safe can we consider ourselves civilized. The Governor said that California’s diversity of people should be celebrated and not just tolerated. People must not be unfairly judged as part of a group. Each man or woman must be evaluated as to his or her individual worth and not on the basis of a group stereotype. This is both a moral imperative and a practical necessity in our society. In referring to the recent disastrous earthquake, he pointed out that the rescuers did not ask the race or religion of the victims. They were all people who equally deserved help and they received it. The Governor then emphasized that the fight against intolerance must be waged daily. Violence motivated by bigotry and prejudice is a particularly "sick" crime. He noted with pride that he had eagerly signed legislation in the past calling for more education, longer sentences - that is, reclassifying misdemeanors to felonies - and, adding a three-year sentence enhancement to hate crimes. Saying he was fully committed to civil and human rights, he then unveiled his new 3-point legislative proposal which includes $256,000 allocated to the State Department of Justice for a better reporting system; $3 million to develop a model curriculum for all school systems; and increased penalties for repeat offenders and the targeting of groups that advocate violence. His speech was followed by an awards ceremony - Courage to Care Awards - for organizations and individuals who have been particularly exemplary in fightig prejudice and bigotry. This dinner gave Rev. Nagy and myself a unique opportunity to meet with Governor Pete Wilson; his wife Gayle; L.A. Commissioner R. Takagi; State Secretary of Child Development and Education Gloria di Marco; Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Greenberg of the Organized Crime Task Force; Bella Meese, Director, Governor’s Office of Community Affairs, and Lloyd Day, of the same office; Rabbi Marvin Hier, and other influential community leaders. The message for the American Hungarian community from the Governor’s crime summit is very strong and clear. First, the vicious crime committed against the Grace Hungarian Reformed Church and our community has generated a great deal of sympathy and support among California’s government, law enforcement and community leaders. This crime has not been forgotten. Secondly, those who espouse hatred of other religions, racial or ethnic groups, do all of us a great disservice. They apparently have not learned the true meaning of America. They deserve "zero tolerance" from our community and will face "zero tolerance" from the leaders of this great state. Árpád Göncz in Spain Árpád Göncz, accompanied by Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky and a group of entrepreneurs, paid an official visit to Madrid. His purpose: to gain unconditional, active support for Hungary’s full-fledged membership in the European Union. In Barcelona, Catalan president Jordi Pujol received his Hungarian counterpart for a luncheon. President Göncz stressed his desire for close cooperation with all European nations for democracy and mutual interests, in order to avoid genocide and the oppression of minorities. Lupis Brokerage House Goes Bankrupt BUDAPEST - On February 9, Lupis Brokerage House declared bankruptcy and asked for a grace period in repaying its 2 billion forints worth of debt. Now, this was not some obscure bank dealing with shady clients - Lupis was known to be a respectable firm that handled the pension funds of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Interior, and large sums of money for State Railways, Education, and the Opera House. Its majority owner, József Lupis, was considered one This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO of the most successful and most reliable representatives of his field. The news of the collapse sent shock waves through Hungarian financial circles. Small creditors have been satisfied, but the big ones will have to wait for Lupis properties to be sold in order to get their money back. Ady-Commemoration The Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation, sponsored by the Hungarian Consulate General of Los Angeles, held a commemorative evening of poetry at the Hollywood Hungarian Reformed Church. The event was beset by difficulties: illness prevented the speaker of the program, as well as all three musicians, from appearing. However, the sheer willpower and determination of organizer Éva Szörényi made it a memorable experience and a true revelation: instead of the wellknown and loved poems, she selected ones that even the proudest Ady-experts have hardly heard in live performance - and, let’s face it, they were mostly hard and bitter outcries against the Hungarian fate, which is no less difficult today as it was in Ady’s day. Three cheers to all the dedicated performers, including Adrienne Nagy, Éva Szörényi, and her son Tamás Örményi. Venezuelan Bank Col________lapse________ CARACAS - The collapse of Venezuela’s biggest bank threatens the nation’s future. Banco Latino’s failure is the worst ever in South America. Analysts fear a social explosion. Banco Latino was the most prestigious bank in Venezuela, with the largest number of branch offices, the highest interest rates and the most customers. Among its 1 million clients were the pension funds of the army, the electrical and oil companies ($1.2 billion), as well as the funds of the government’s bank insurer. The bank invested millions of dollars in 493 buildings, several farms and hundreds of small businesses. When a Paris office was opened last fall, important clients were treated to an all-expensespaid three-day trip to Paris to celebrate. Last month, however, the bank failed. The collapse of Banco Latino poses a serious threat to the whole financial system and economy of the country. Bailing the bank out would cost $5 billion. Deficit Is Less Than Expected______ BUDAPEST - The year 1993 closed with a 199.7 billion forints budget deficit. Income totaled 939.6 billion, expenses 1.139,3 billion forints. The deficit was less than the planned 213.3 billion forints. The shortage was compensated in full from the issuance of domestic bonds. Hungarian Air Space Should Not Be Used Prime Minister Peter Boross declared that, in case of a NATO air strike against Bosnian Serbs, Hungary’s air space should not be used. He stressed that relations with his country’s southern neighbors are such as to make it impossible for Hungary to participate in a potential foreign intervention. However, AW ACS will be allowed to continue their reconnaissance missions through Hungarian air space as long as there is no military action involved. Record Heroin Catch BUDAPEST - The largest heroin catch ever was accomplished by the Organized Crime Task Force of the National Police Headquarters last week. In a Budapest suburb, while searching a house, the detectives found 73 bags, half a kilo each, in all, 36,5 kilos of heroin. They took several Turkish and Hungarian citizens into custody.
