AMERICAN Hungarian Journal Fate Was Stronger Than the Will... Excerpts from John Fercsey’s New York interview with Consul General Balázs László "Even at a time when hopelessness had weighed heavy on Hungary, he looked back into the past and ahead into the future with the mind of a virtual statesman, so he would be ready, even though there was no hope, at a moment’s notice when and if the time came.” This is how a former aide remembers József Antall. At present, Balázs László is Consul General of Hungary in New York, but in 1990-92 he was work­ing closely with the prime mini­ster, accompanying him on his trips abroad. He got to know An­tall in high school, where Antall was teaching history. "A magnetic force emanated from him when he talked about Hungarian history... He reminded us of the political wis­dom of Eötvös and Deák." When Antall was removed from his teaching position for political reasons, he became a librarian. While working in the field of medical history, he continued to study various other subjects such as the history of politics and diplomacy. "In the 60’s and 70’s, when no one could dream that the Soviet Union would collapse, he was preparing for the time when he would become an active par­ticipant of history." Then László Balázs talks about Mr. Antall’s role in the dissolu­tion of the Warsaw Pact: "He had only been in office for a month when the Warsaw Pact summit was held in Moscow. The leaders of the other socialist countries - Havel, Jaruzelski, Maiziere and Iliescu - made for a very unlikely group of allies, and the Hun­garian government did not even want to be represented at the summit. Antall’s intuition prevailed, he went and made a strong statement that shocked the participants. He requested the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. It was as if someone had thrown a heavy stone into a lake that seemed calm on the surface. Havel was silent, as were all the others, afraid and uncertain what would happen. No doubt it was Antall’s courage that brought about the dissolution." "Antall alone saw the historical opportunity then, in 1990. Not only the East, but also the West was hesitant, stalling for time. Yet, what a brilliant move it was! Had the Warsaw Pact been still in place at the time of the coup of ’91, things might have turned out quite differently in Moscow. Also, Antall was among the first to stand by Jeltsin, who will never forget Hungary this favor." The New York Times claimed that József Antall was not a charismatic personality. - "Maybe he was no orator, no spectacular hero surrounded by a romantic halo like Havel or Walesa; he came through best in government sessions or friendly conversations. Yet, when it comes to international politics, statesmanship and analytical abilities, he was far above anyone else, east or west. He was respected by everyone, and made Hungary and island of stability in our turbulent region." József Antall fought valiantly for the interests of all 15 million Hungarians, as well as against the deadly disease which threatened his life. Fate was stronger than the will, he is no longer with us, but let’s hope that those who come after him will follow his lead.
