AMERICAN Hungarian Journal BUDAPEST Agreement With IMF The Executive Committee of IMF unanimously approved the 15-month ready reserve credit to Hungary. A quarterly amount of $100 million is waiting to be used, and to be repaid only after a three-year grace period. The credit is important for Hungary, not so much for the money itself as for the fact that with it, IMF declared the country a "good credit risk", which lays the foundation for other loans from the international money market under more favorable conditions. Agrarian Demonstration at Kossuth Square More than ten thousand agricultural workers marched in front of the Hungarian Parliament last Tuesday flashing slogans such as "Save the Agriculture!" The demonstration was meant to call attention to the profound crisis of agriculture in Hungary. In the past four years, production decreased by onefourth, and farmers were forced to use up one-third of their reserves. 200 thousand agricultural workers lost their jobs; the rest are working for near minimum wages, unable to increase profitability. There is no livelihood and no possibility to grow. We’ve Got To Win in 1994! "Either we win a four-year term at the 1994 elections, or another election will become necessary in 1995" - said Minister of Interior Peter Boross, who is also the temporary head of MDF, the Hungarian Democratic Forum, at a meeting in the city of Szolnok, adding: "The Christian national middle class sees no other force besides the coalition that would be able to govern." Boross stressed that Hungary is the most endangered state of Europe, in pressing need of centralization. He urged increased authority for local autonomies. He said the model is ready to be used: between the two world wars, Hungary had the best-developed governing system in Europe. There is no parliamentary democracy now, because the two-third rule makes the enforcement of the majority principle impossible. KATA CSONGRÁDI - a singularly talented actress has won the hearts of Los Angeles Stars come and go, shows may be good, tolerable, and even wonderful, but never have I met a more magnetic personality, on and off stage, than this rising star from Hungary. Those of the Hungarian community of Los Angeles who were able to attend her solo performance Friday night at the Women’s Club of Hollywood, had an instant love affair with Kata Csongrádi. She is lovely, spirited, warmhearted, and very-very talented, with a wonderful sense of humor, and a faultlessly beautiful figure. Easy for her to be beautiful, some might say (and they did!) since she is so young. Yes, she is young too, and yet she knows her stuff like few of even the most seasoned performers do. She is sensitive to the needs of the audience, she takes us on a ride in music, prose and poetry, with just the right dosage of laughter and tears, eufória and quiet, subdued awe. She sings and dances, she comes off the stage and walks among the tables, including every single one of us in the fun. She looks just as great in men’s clothes as in a breathtaking pink soufflé of a gown, showing nothing and implying everything. By the way, she designs her own costumes, she writes her own songs - with the help of husband István S. Nagy, in short, "ES", who is the best-known song-writer in Hungary - she has written an autobiography and a handbook on witchcraft, and in October she will debut in her own full-fledged play, which promises to be a real treat. The producer of the program was Julius Jancso, who has shown us yet another side of his multi-faceted personality. He also provided refreshments and pastries from the Csárdás Restaurant. Joseph Géczy was at the piano, anticipating every move of the star as accompanist, and proving his excellence as a pianist with selections from Gershwin and Bernstein. The highlights of the show were the three songs on themes of Claire Kenneth’s bestsellers "Night in Cairo," "Rendezvous in Rome," and "Love Was Out of the Question;" Claire and Kata have been best friends for eight years, and the songs are a tribute to this friendship. We were floating on the waves of Kata’s "Million Roses," and praying with her when she sang "Bless me my Lord," we got inebriated when she was playing tipsy, and we discovered that in each of us there is a gypsy... Yes, Kata Csongrádi does all these things, without giving herself the airs of a star. She is a warm, outgoing, lovable human being with a happy disposition. From one Monday morning to the next, between the two trips to the airport, I had ample chance to observe her magic and her creativity at work. Nobody remains indifferent to her. She draws people out, she finds their most characteristic habits and attitudes, and makes gentle fun of them. It’s like having your portrait done by Jean Effel - just a sketch, no details, and yet it is you, you recognize yourself and others recognize you instantly: Kata has that particular vision which turns real-life events into comedy. She laughs at our human shortcomings without This page written by ATA accredited translator SUSAN JANCSO malice, and if there is a tiny little bit of good - which Kata swears can be found in every human being - she will find that too, and make it shine. She brings out the best in everyone she meets, and she makes friends for life. She certainly has made one in this reporter, Susan Jancso THANK YOU, OH LIFE by George G. Strem Thank you, oh Life, For being alive, For tastng my food And finding it good. For the things I get: A good, solid bed, Of all things the best - A good night’s rest. I’m grateful for the sunshine, A warm room in wintertime, That I’m still up and around, And I’m not sick-room-bound. Looking out - Turmoil throughout, The world is in disorder. But in my little corner All is quiet, silent - It is a little island. I’m grateful for the day, Today and yesterday, For friends and family And that a little I can still see. I’m grateful especially That my mind is clear and free Like seeds in a fertile ground Thoughts therein abound, Past and present they embrace, The limited, limitless space. Thank you, oh Life, For being alive, Still able to strive, Strive for what is great and true, Thank you, thank you, thank you! A Bosnian Girl By George G. Strem A house in Bosnia, A girl just stepped out. An explosion is heard, Terrifying, loud. The girl, frightened, Back to the house she fled. The house began to crash, Collapsed over her head. For the dead and wounded They came to take them away. They found the little girl, Under the ruins she lay. They took her out from there, Her body torn and cold, The blood flowed freely From her wounds, manyfold. The doctors pitied her - A yound child, so pretty. We shall take her to England, She should have surgery! They were able to save A Bosnian girl, so small, Yet, Bosnian men by the thousands In fierce battles fall. Toward a single person We can be humane, sage, But when it comes to crowds, Our wildest instincts rage.
