AMERICAN Hungarian Journal LOS ANGELES EVENTS ST. STEPHEN REIGNS AGAIN Events commemorating August 20, coronation day of the first King of Hungary "If the History of Los Angeles Hungarians is ever written, Sunday, August 16,1992 will certainly be a gold-letter entry in it.” Father Hermann Rettig, or "Father Joseph", as the believers lovingly call him, put into words the feeling in the hearts of all those present. The ecumenical service at St. Stephen’s Church was a memorable event, where the Hungarian community, regardless of religious denomination, had come together for the first time to praise God with one voice, in real unity. The events of the day started with the Holy Right Procession and Hungarian Holy Mass in the morning, lunch in the Lany Room, and continued in the afternoon with the participation of various congregations from the L.A. area. Gábor Lukin played the church organ, Károly Héthalmi Páth and Emőke Érseki directed the choir, István Czövek sang "Our Father". In addition to Father Joseph, lectures and prayers were delivered by Bálint Nagy, Sándor Szabó, Zoltán Vass, Dr. Béla Bónis (Reformed Church), and József Novák (Baptist Church). The service concluded with the sounds of the Hungarian and Székely Anthems. St. Stephen’s Day Reception at the Hungarian Consulate Mr. András Márton and the staff of the Hungarian Consulate General held a reception on Thursday, August 20th at the elegant Bel Air Crest Club House to remember King Stephen I, the Founder of Hungary. The invited guests included prominent personalities of the L.A. Hungarian community, representatives of the press and cultural life. They enjoyed the excellent food and wine, the splendid view, and each other’s company, then all gathered around the Consul General to hear his St. Stephen’s Day Address. Mr. Márton has a knack for finding the right words for every occasion. What he says is always relevant and makes every festive event a memorable one. This time he outlined the merits of St. Stephen in the survival of our nation. He said this survival, amidst so much danger and so many misfortunes, is a never-ending mystery of our destiny, and he went on to describe all the fateful turns we could have taken and didn’t, and all the beneficial ones we could have missed and didn’t. Had St. Stephen not settled us down in the Carpathian basin, intruduced us to an agrarian way of life and the Christian faith, we may have lost our national characteristics, our language, everything that was special about us and not even a trace would have remained of us. What is it, of St. Stephens teachings and principles, that is still valid and can give us direction in the changing world of today? He believed that all men are born equal, and admonished his son Imre, and all his subjects, to be humble, tolerant, gentle, capable of accepting and understanding each other. Nothing is as destructive as pride and hatred, and only a nation of many colors can become strong. Mr. Márton concluded his speech with another quote from the Founder: "Have you ever heard of a Greek who governed Latins in a Greek manner, or a Latin who governed Greeks in a Latin manner?" Those who could not decipher St. Stephen’s admonishment to his son, or understood it but acted contrary to it, could become politicians but never statesmen in Hungary. Now that we are trying to assert our European nature, we must not forget our obligation to be firm in our national consciousness, and to preserve our Hungarian heritage. This alone can assure that we enter the 21st century with confidence and faith ANDY’S Electrical Co. Residential - Commercial - 24 Hour Service!
