by IMRE KOVÁCS THE HISTORY OF THE PREMONSTRATENSIAN PROVOSTRY OF TÜRJE (A brief summary) The civil parish of Türje lies near the railway line connecting Ukk and Zalaegerszeg, to the west from Sümeg, Szentgrót riding, county of Zala. Politically the civil parish and the provosry have always belonged to the county of Zala. From the ecclesiastical point of view they have belonged to the diocese of Veszprém since the Middle Ages and throughout the modern times. Between 1608 and 1786, the provosts of Türje recognized the jurisdiction and authority of the bishops of Győr. Despite, the bishops of Veszprém paid canonical visits to Türje in the years 1718, 1746, and 1764. The patron saint of the provostry is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day of its celebration is March 25. The name of Türje is spelt in over twenty different ways in official documents dated from the Middle Ages. Its own. documents and bulla of the convent use the version „Jurle". Later on, it becomes „Thyrle", then in the modern times the form Türje becomes accepted. The exact year of the foundation of the provostry is not known. No deed of foundation has, been handed down to posterity. Unwritten tradition has had it since the 18th century that it was founded bi Count Lambert Thyrle in. 1184. This allegation cannot beverified from earlier sources so far brought to light. According to another tradition, it was founded on the basis of a deed of gift by Governor Dénes Szentgróti, thus establishing him as founder and 1242 as the year of foundation. The Nineveh catalogue, discovered in foreign archives, says that the provostry already existed in 1234. The provostry is of no royal charter origin, but a clannish monastery. Its liege lord from the time of its foundation was the Szentgróti branch of the Türje clan. When that family died off, the Hagymásy family of Berekszó, whose members were partly Lutherans, partly Calvinists, became the liege lord of the provostry between 1527 and 1655. From 1663 to 1786 the Roman Catholic Batthyány family acted as liege lord of Türje. At the time of its foundation the first monks were sent there from among the members of the provostry of Csorna. Therefore its father abbot was the provost of Csorna from the beginning to the middle of the 16th century. After the restoration of the order, between 1703 and 1741 the abbot of Pernegg, and later that of Geras, became father abbot of Türje. Between 1741 and 1785 the abbot of Hradisch was father abbot of both Türje and Csorna. Between 1802 and 1950 was not an independent provostry, it was merged into one with Csorna. In the Middle Ages the provost' of Türje was elected by the convent. In 1513 there were not enough members in the order for election, thus András Szintay was appointed provost of Türje by the superintendent of the order, provost Ferenc Fegyverneky of Ság. The appointment was confirmed by the chapter of ' the province too. Following the banishment, later the dying off, of the members of the order, during the long period lasting from 1527 to 1703, provostship was conferred by royal deed of gift on the so-called commendam provosts: diocesan priests, bishops. After the order was restored, between 1703 and 1741 the provost of Türje was elected by the convent of Pernegg, between 1741 and 1785 by the convent of Hradisch, from among their members. The elected, or appointed, provost was invested with his office by the local Ordinary, i. e. the bishop of Veszprém. Between 1608 and 1785, except for Lipót Walthum, all the provosts of Türje, were handed over the tall head-dress and insignia of provostship by the bishop of Győr. As witnessed ny records, the names of 27 Premonstratensian provosts of Türje are known from the Middle Ages. Besides the bishops of Veszprém, it had 7 commendam provosts in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 18th century, Türje had 8 Premonstratensian provosts, of whom Adalbert Pintár, Lipót Walthum, Kristóf Girzik, and Izidor Tichy were independent provosts of Türje. The members of the order at Türje were ordained priests. Their number was
