TIBOR TÓTH: SMALL HAMLETS — VILLAGES — NETWORK OF SETTLEMENTS (Summary) Based on the conditions of equilibrum among the fundamentals of agricultural production — soil, capital, population — the study models the endowments of structure in the network of settlements. To illustrate the functionality of the conditions of equilibrum it uses the probable trend of output to be expected. Analysing the model the author suggests that the determining elements of the network of settlements result from various related yet to a considerable extent independent levels of the division of labour. In the described system the complementary partners of towns are the agricultural units arising from the combination of markettowns and settlements with a largescale production. Such is the situation in Central Europe at least. The traditional network of villages is not directly involved in this system of interactions since it is characterized by inorganic participation in the division of labour. The author does not rely on the usual indices generally referring to the size of population but characterizes the villages by the zero or nearly zero level of economic growth.
