IBOLYA HOLÁCS: EFFECTS OF SOCIALIST TRANSFORMATION ON THE TRANSDANUBIAN SETTLEMENTS (Summary) The structure of Transdanubian settlements is still marked by specific historic traits. The level of urbanization does not correspond to the development of economy. The pronounced importance ascribed to the capital and the county seats places the growth of the villages at a disadvantage. The „homogenous" Hungarian village no longer exitst and in its place various types of villages with alternating degrees of progress developed. At the same time smaller settlements started to regress. Simultaneously the differences in finances, demographic factors, infrastructure and — to a lesser degree — in living standards are on the increase. Along with the decrease of the village population, in recent times also a certain remigration has been experienced. It is by all means necessary — and through a conscious settlement policy also possible — to encourage this trend. The provision of a more balanced economic development could greatly contribute to this end.
