ILONA PAL—KOVÁCS AND JÁNOS RECHNITZER: MODELLING THE HIERARCHY AND THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF THE SPHERE OF ATTRACTION (Summary) The study defines the communities within the network of settlements as points of sources of power. These sources exercise a repulsive and a suction effect upon their environment and upon the neighbouring settlements. The strength and the territorial extent of the effects upon the surroundings are determined by the of the settlements' socio-economic development. The authors attempt to offer a multilevel definition of the boundaries of the sources of power — the sphere of attraction — of the settlements. The first level is constituted by the big-area connections i.e. by the field of force of the territorial interactions between settlements of the same size and of an indentical degree of development. The definition of the direct sphere of attraction incorporates the second level. Through the structural analysis of this level the social and economic nature of the connections between the centre and the surroundings can be determined. Ultimately, the third level consists of the centre and its direct surroundings, the interaction and the dependency of which can already be bescribed by the operating model of the area. A theoretic system of models could greatly contribute to the exploration of the connections among settlements and their cooperations with their environment. •
