KÁROLY HORVÁTH THE SONG-TREASURE OF JÁNOS SZILI, A PEASANT FROM HERNYÉK Resume I am collecting since 1953 the folk-music of two regions of county Zala, — of Göcsej and of Hetes. Up to now I have taken about 4500 songs. I have collected the majority of the songs from peasant men and peasant women. Since 1954 I am following with close attention the traditions, the folklore and folk-music of Hernyék, a small village in Göcsej. I have learned from János Szili, a peasant living here, who was born 1891, a lot about the village, the old patriarchal life, their farming, their housing conditions, their nourishment, their clothing, their entertainments and their habits. I have also tried to collect all his songs. Beside my own collection of songs and lyrics, I have asked also for the lyrics of songs which I knew from various song-books, prayer- and school-books as well as from radio and television. In the course of this work I found about 4.500 melodies and about 10.000 verses of same. Beside the folk-songs also tunes, songs of children and of habits, Russian language songs learned in war-prison, songs and calls of marketeers, beggars and other people visiting the village, as well as melodius shouts, calling the animals were inserted into my collection. He sang for me both: folk-songs and songs by known authors, in total 604. I publish these in the following grouping: A. Songs in prose-construction (37 songs) a) Jingles for children 1. for quite small children which have still to be carried 2. songs about the weater and imitating animals b) Mocking songs c) Songs of children's games d) Songs connected with Luca-day e) Minstrelcy fragments f) Piling up songs g) Calls for animals h) Calls offering goods i) Parodies of dirges j) Various B.
