July 21, 1965 William Penn PAGE 7 NEWS SCENE FROM BRANCH 14 CLEVELAND, OHIO Approximately 50 people were present to celebrate the closing of this bowling season at the Branch 14 annual bowling banquet held at Kornya’s Tavern on June 12. Those present enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner, with stuffed cabbage and home-made apple strudel (rétes). This fine dinner was made even more enjoyable with the accompaniment of Hungarian music. President Nicholas Juhasz served as toastmaster and, after his opening remarks, introduced Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director, whose remarks in Hungarian and English were summed up thus: “We should consider this affair a local fellowship and bowling tournament celebration, and this fine turnout is proof of the real meaning of fraternal spirit.” Division Manager John L. Balia said: “I am appreciative of the cordial reception by the Cleveland people during my first year here. My desire is to work for a better and brighter future for all our William Penn members.” President Juhasz then announced that Branch 14 was reorganizing its Women’s Auxiliary. His statement was met with such enthusiastic response that officers were elected immediately. They are: Betty Knapp — president; Jean Semetko — vice president; Betty Rundo — secretary; Dorothy Kastan — treasurer; Margaret Zhanke and Rose Sebasy — trustees. I am happy to report that the first meeting of our newly formed auxiliary was held June 23 with 19 members attending. A subsequent meeting was held July 7, and another will be held August 11 at 7:30 p. m., at the Cleveland Slovak Social Club, 11216 Buckeye Road. These meetings are important because the plans for this years picnic will be discussed and tickets for the picnic will be distributed among members. President Knapp informs the members that the by-word for the next two months will be: sell! sell! sell! BALLA Reporter WHY GO TO CHURCH It does not surprise most of us these days to hear people admit they cannot agree with the dogma or doctrine, or iron-clad beliefs, of any certain church. Some of the people who feel like this do not, as a result, go to any church. Naturally, in a free country, with many churches, there will be mistakes made by churches, church governing bodies, by church officials and even ministers. To refuse to attend church services because the church, or the officials and people who make it up, are not perfect, is immature reasoning. The church is trying to do God’s work. And the church does good for so many. It inspires and comforts so many. It saves so many. Perfect, or imperfect, it is a force for good in this world. The forces of evil are strong. Surely we can take time out to support the leading organziation in the world today which stands for the teachings of good, and by supporting it, we set an example for others, and for ourselves.
