PAGE 8 William Penn NEWS FROM NORTHWESTERN OHIO Branch 27 Toledo, Ohio By: Stephen J. Ivancso. Div. Mgr. April 'showers bring May flowers and May brings the William Penn Annual Bowling Tournament and Fellowship days. Toledo will be well represented by seven men’s teams and three women’s teams, plus a few extra bowlers to compete with teams other than Toledo. So — it looks like Toledo should come home with a prize or more. Calling the attention of all team captains concerning the William Penn emblem: See that the members of your team have this emblem and display it on their shirts. Just write to John Sabo, Tournament Administrator, and ask for the emblems. Enclose 25 cents for each one. Don’t wait until the last minute. As we approach the tournament and you may need some adjustment in your bowling equipment, kindly see William Penn members who are in the bowling business. In West Toledo, Rollie Schmidt can help you — while downtown, Walt Johnson and Dick Sendi are always available — in the South End, “300” Eddie Heer is ready and waiting. Eddie, after years of bowling, finally hit the charmed circle with a 300 game at Herb Chester’s RCR. Congratulations and best wishes, Ed. Bus Carone, on Upton Avenue, will give you quick service for the tournament, so no excuses in Detroit. All these men will gladly help you in your bowling problems. Jimmy Molnár and friend had a marathon basketball game. At last score the loser had over one thousand points and the men were still going strong. Who won ? At this writing, no one knows. One thing for sure, a record was established. Frank Puskas writes from California and says that he ad his wife If the MOTOR CITY NEWS article is not up to par, it is because your ole Ferret is trying to create under terrific pressures. First of all, missed the March issue trying to help organize the 17 bowling teams from Detroit’s three branches. Nearly missed this April issue as your reporter is substituting for Mrs. Elizabeth Rigo at the Detroit District Office. Why I am subbing at the office is not a happy occasion. Our Bette Rigo’s “Mom”, her aunt Laura YONA died April 15th and was buried this morning. A,last minute call to yours truly resulted in my overworked routine to become snarled; the business at the District Office was heavy since it is the beginning of a quarter; it has been a harried week. But to NEWS! All of us in Branch 18, 56 and 500 extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Elizabeth Rigo on her loss. Bette is one of the best-liked and bestknown of our William Penn membership. No one knows better than your repoi’ter what it is to lose Mom — but, Bette, take heart in the fact that she lived a long and good life. CONGRATULATIONS to our very Rose had a fine bacon roast February 22 in their back yard. Here in Toledo, either you were ice skating or freezing. Branch 27 members on the sick list include Stephen Gall, Andrew Kiss, Mrs. Frank Ivancso, Julia Lajti and Frank Nagy. Rapid recovery for them is our wish. Dorothy Belegrin presented husband John with a baby daughter. Sister Kim has a playmate now. Congratulations and best wishes to the Belegrins. Paul and Mary Gerrard had a dual celebration. It was Paul's birthday and also their wedding' anniversary! Others celebrating birthdays at Branch 27: Rex Aranyosi and Joe Majoros. Jackie Alex will have to go all out in the “baking department” — sons Jimmy and Johnny Alex are both celebrating their birthdays in April. Brother Frank will add another one to his list on the 24th of April. Last month, we mentioned the 5-7-10 split. Another fine bowler has joined the list — none other than the well-known bowler, Leo Manera, in the Times Classic League. Leo’s two sons, Mark and Chris, will have to show Dad how not to get these splits. We are sorry to hear our doubles partner Eddie Boroski, is not feeling- well, and we wish him the fast recovery for one thing; we need his score in Detroit. Vacationing in Florida, Dr. Andrew Winters informed your writer that the weather was always in the pleasant 80’s, which note reminds us: As the warmer weather nears, the accident and death rates are also climbing. Therefore, do not take chances when you drive to Detroit. We want no tragedies among our members traveling to and from the tournament. youngest William Penn member who is our new councilman in Southgate — Stephen G. Danko — who at the tender age of 22 fooled the old-time hardened politicians, and with certain courage and youthful enthusiasm, beat out long-time incumbents. Thank you, Mr. Councilman Danko for letting me be about the first of your solid supporters to know that “WE MADE IT!” Our very best wishes to young Danko, and you can be sure some of us will be at council meetings to see how “our boy” makes out. SUCCESS to Frank and Grace Csiszár, one of the gals on our bowling team, on their new venture at “FRANK’S", Custom Tailoring & Dry Cleaning. SUCCESS to Lucas Refrigeration Service, also. LADIES’ AUXILIARY: — We gratefully accept the excellent C.P.A, report given on the auxiliary cookbook fund account, made out by John P. “Jack” Veszprémi. Jack is Branch 18 Controller. The April card party of the auxiliary will be cancelled because of Easter — but plan to attend on May 16th at 2:00 p.m. Excellent prizes, Hungarian goodies, etc. SPORTS CLUB MIXED LEAGUE will end its season on April 17th with a three way tie between Homer’s Barber Shop (Barnes and Pembertsons), Molnár Funeral Home (Irene Kekes, Joe Demeter, Joe and Marie Papp); and Rapid Printing Company (Jolán and Louis Lucas, Jack and Marie Bieniek). May the best of these three teams win. NOTE TO MRS. AMELIA FODOR, publisher of William Penn — We are still in there trying. If we lose out the last night of the season — well, we weren’t just quite good enough. Our Jack B. has a high series of 663 and 248. Vera Pemberton just became the highest vyman bowler in the Detroit association of the WIBC with a 177- 163 and a big 289 for 629. A big write-up in Detroit Free Press, two Dearborn newspapers and the Melius newspapers of the big Down- River area, certainly gave our William Penn and Vera a beautiful write-up. Congratulations again Vera, we are very proud of one of our newest William Penners. Sorry about that wobbly 6 pin! Mixed League bowling banquet will be held at Dearborn Moose No. 1620 on Saturday, May 22nd. Elvi-April 21, 1965 ra László is Banquet Chairman and preliminary discussions with her promise to exceed all our banquets of this league. Sorry to hear about Mrs. Theresa László, Elvira’s mother, who after several years of illness, is now in the hospital. Take heart, Elvira, we are all with you! Delray Super Market and Ladies’ Auxiliary teams bowled in the Detroit City Tournament this monthseveral good scores were l'olled — we won’t know if our teams won anything as yet. Remember, bowlers and guests. Detroit is polishing up the Dynamic City for your arrival next month. We finally thawed out of the “Big Snow of 1965” and the green iá beginning to show through. By the time you get here, Detroit will be in full bloom. Thunder Bowl Lanes are excellent. The hotel looks good from where we sit. Detroit Tournament Committee has its next meeting on Wednesday, April 28th at the Statler-Hilton. All members please attend.
