As can be seen from the rules given above, the William Penn Fraternal Association is again making every effort to give the youth of our organization an opportunity to gain a wider knowledge, a chance to express themselves, and of course some means to prepare for the future. It will afford all the contestants a good chance to delve deeper into the fraternal activities of the William Penn and at the same time to do research on the history of the Association. In addition to this, the winners will have an opportunity to become better known among the membership throughout the United States. We urge all members who are high school Seniors this year to participate in this Essay Contest. This could be an important stepping stone to their future higher education. It will be the aim of the editor, in the ensuing months, to bring further information about the contest. Therefore, we recomend that all those who are interested in this contest follow the WILLIAM PENN monthly publication closely. We urge the parents and grandparents to call the attention of their children and grandchildren to this Essay Contest. To enter a contest such as this requires from the contestant considerable research and spending much time in properly preparing the Essay. We are fortunate in this country that almost every community has a public library where contestants can obtain much background information, in our case on the fraternal societies and their activities in this country. We should like to see all of our high school Seniors participate in this Essay Contest. The theme is a challenging one and it will be interesting for us to find out what our youth thinks of: “WHAT DOES FRATERNALISM MEAN TO ME.” “BY-LINE FROM 129” EVELYN BOUCHER — Branch 129 •— Secretary-Correspondent Well, summer is almost over and in a not many days the children will be on their way back to school. Please remember this by driving carefully! Keep our children alive! — 129 — I wish to thank Jolán Lucas, my fellow columnist in Detroit, for her kind invitation to attend Bob-Lo Island Day. As I explained in my letter, my youngest had an emergency appendectomy, so that prevented our trip to Detroit. I hope by this time that Jolan’s husband, Louis, is well. He, too, took a “trip” to the hospital. — 129 — We were very honored to have with us at our fish fry George Mekker, who is a nephew of Mr. Julius Macker, our President, and Miss Mary Ann Vess who accompanied him. I met and talked with Mr. Mekker. He is certainly a very nice and personable young man. We hope he will visit us often. — 129 — The Carl Hoffmans returned from their vacation in Northern Michigan. It was hard for Carl to admit that his wife, Helen, and daughters turned out to be the real fishers. — 129 — Mrs. Emma Bolar, president of our William Penn Ladies’ Club, has been confined to her home for several weeks with a back injury. Hurry get well, Emma, as we miss you! — 129 — Birthday congratulations to Henrietta Kovach. I can’t seem to find out just how old Henrietta is, but if working hard and rushing around at our dinners is any indication, she isn’t over 20! She is a grand person. We all love her and wish her many more happy birthdays. — 129 — Lou says: “Take out policies on your children TODAY, For better tomorrow THE WILLIAM PENN WAY.” SEMI-ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT JANUARY 1,1962 TO JUNE 30,1962 Life Disability Pension Department Department Department Totals Ledger Assets — January 1, 1962 $27,064,419 98 $1,359,262.19 $335,460.33 $28,759,142.50 Income Monthly Dues $ 1,326,754.75 $ 91,377.40 $ —0— $ 1,418,132.15 Miscellaneous 74,221.18-0— —0— 74,221.18 Investment Income 583,207.75 —0— 8,121.28 591,329.03 Capital Gains 24,429.94 —0— 1,311.18 25.741.12 Pension Plan Income —0— —0— 6,806.00 6,806.00 TOTAL INCOME $ 2,008,613.62 $ 91,377.40 $ 16,238.46 $ 2,116,229.48 Disbursements * Claims $ 1,056,984.87 $ 91,164.73 $ —0— $ 1,148,149.60 Dividends 63,243.02 —0— —0— 63,243.02 Miscellaneous 30,585.20 —0— —0— 30,585.20 Commissions and Fees 156,167.65 4,095.96 —0— 160,263.61 General Operating & Investment Expenses 340,547.95 —0— 26.00 340,573.95 Capital Losses 46,818.20 —0— —0— 46,818.20 Pension Plan Payments —0— —0— 15,155.75 15,155.75 Taxes, Licenses and Fees 15,783.47 —0— —0— 15,783.47 TOTAL DISBURSEMENTS $ 1,710,130.36 $ 95,260.69 $ 15,181.75 $ 1,820,572.80 Total Net Ledger Assets — June 30, 1962 $27,362,903.24 $1,355,378.90 $336,517.04 $29,054,799.18 JULIUS E. SOMOGYI, Treasurer JOHN SABO, Controller Have you checked your insurance lately? — Are your children fully covered with insurance? This in one of the most important questions, but can you answer, “Yes”? You fathers and mothers are William Penn policy-holders but, why not your children??? WILLIAM PENN offers low premiums competitive with other companies and nowhere are there better rates for children than with WILLIAM PENN. Do you parents realize that children of today need more insurance than in former years, what with higher cost of education and the mounting accident rates? You certainly owe it to yourselves and to your children to look into the excellent policies WILLIAM PENN offers for children. CALL LOU TOKÁR TODAY, HI 4-2760, or HI 3-7797, and have him explain the policies to you. INSURE WITH WILLIAM PENN TODAY FOR A BETTER TOMORROW! — I can say: “MY FAMILY IS A WILLIAM PENN FAMILY” — CAN YOU? — 129 — Don’t forget the euchre parties on Tuesday night 8:30 at your William Penn Club. — 129 — The William Penn Club will sponsor a Cabbage Roll Dinner on Saturday, September 15th, beginning at 5 P.M. — Those that have attended our Cabbage Roll Dinners before know how delicious they are, but for those who have not attended, please come down, get acquainted and have dinner with us. Saturday, September 15th — 5 P.M.! — 129 — Arrangements are also in the making for our Annual William Penn Picnic which should be September 2 at Edgewater Park. This is a tentative date and arrangements are indefinite at this time, so check with your William Penn Club for further developments. — 129 — I received a nice letter from Mel Hobbs, who is a member of the Knaver Bowling Team of East Chicago, Indiana. My very best wishes to the whole Knaver Team. — 129 — In closing my column may I remind you, as a William Penn member, to patronize your William Penn Club. This club is being operated FOR YOU! We need your loyal support in maintaining it. Frank and Ann Papai are the managers, and Ann always prepares a menu full of variety — delicious Hungarian food such as stuffed cabbage, Hungarian sausage, home-made soups, and a selection of sandwiches. There are hundreds of you William Penn members who have never been to your Club and there are members who were once active in the organization but for some reason are inactive now. Your club needs you cooperation NOW and I am asking all you William Penn members to patronize it and show an interest in your organization. THIS IS YOUR CLUB — LET US SEE “YOU” THIS WEEK!
