BRANCH 14 VACATES OLD PREMISE Time and its changes affect everyone and everything, as was true recently of Branch 14, Cleveland, Ohio, when it turned away for ever from its old property, the William Penn Home, on Buckeye Road. It was time to give up the old quarters, but before doing so Branch 14 held a farewell banquet in a sentimental gesture of “good-by” to the grand old place which had made and witnessed so many of our Association’s activities in Cleveland. The program opened with the singing of the American and the Hungarian national anthems by Mrs. Helen Majoros Palasics, who later in the program sang other numbers as did Frank Szappanos, accompanied by the Geza Barat orchestra. Official greetings were extended by Bartholomew Szilagyi, secretary of Branch 14, and the Rev. Gabriel Brachna, rector of the East Side Evangelical Church, said the invocation. Toastmaster of the evening was Dr. Andrew Kovács, William Penn Director of Cleveland. The assembled guests sat down to tables laden with delicious food. Beautiful flowers elegantly arranged and placed by Mrs. Kovács, the Director’s wife, enhanced the scene. In addition to the farewell angle of this final Cleveland William Penn Home program, other features of the event were the burning of the mortgage by Municipal Judges Louis Petrash and Joseph Stearns, who spoke in Hungarian and in English respectively, and the presentation of the Illustrious Citation and the Gold Emblem by William Penn Controller John Sabo, including a gold wrist watch presented by the treasurer of Branch 14 in the name of the branch, to Nicholas Juhasz, president of Branch 14, Mr. Sabo eulogized the veteran branch officer and stated that under president Juhasz the membership of Branch 14 grew from 1200 to 3000. Others who extended greetings or spoke were Jack P. Russell, president of Cleveland’s City Council; Edward Torda, vice president of Branch 14; Stephen Danko, Detroit William Penn Director; Louis Jackovic, president of the Magyar Club, who sold the William Penn Home; Coloman R. Bertalan, president of the Szabolcs County Group; James Készéi, president of Cleveland Branch 45; Frank Szabó, president of the 16th District Democratic Club; Joseph J. Horvath, State Representative of Ohio. Mailed and telegraphed messages of good will were received from these national officers of the William Penn Fraternal Association, and were read to the guests: Julius Macker, President; Frank M. Magyary, Akron Director; Julius E. Somogyi, Treasurer; Gay B. Banes, General Counsel. Also sending greetings were Frank J. Cher, Administrator of the Fraternal Affairs Department; Steve Úsztok, Detroit Division Manager; and Tibor Marton, Los Angeles District Manager recently of Cleveland. The program had a rather humorous ending. Somehow a little Negro boy entered the building and found himself among the guests. He at once become a curious observer, and when the honored Branch 14 president, Nicholas Juhasz, spoke the concluding words of the farewell banquet, the colored youngster joined in roundly applauding the final speaker — to the amusement of all who saw the boy clapping his hands vigorously. r..... loaouL,1:loaoi 1 f,:3onoc lonoi sa BRANCH 18 MOTOR CITY NEWS Detroit, Michigan —=-----ioné ==By JOLÁN LUCAS--------aonoi-. JUST A SHORT NOTICE! Because of the unexpected illness and major operation of your Ferret’s #1 man, Louis Lucas, I was so befuddled with worry and apprehension that for one of those rare times in the last 28 years the deadline completely slipped out of heart and mind. Luke had his operation, feels fine and will have the rest of the short Michigan summer to recuperate and convalesce in his boat on the sunny Detroit River. In the meantime, branch business goes on. The Bob-Lo Outing will be history by the time this reaches the press. The Fashion Show report of the Auxiliary will be detailed, positively, in the August issue. Plans for the Tour of Hungary being conducted by Auxiliary President Margaret Veszprémi are just about concluded. More that 25 William Penn members will be traveling to Hungary from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport to New York and hence to Hungary on August 12th — to September 15th. Details of that later. We hope that the Fraternal Affairs Department will decide on Detroit for the Junior Bowling Tournament . . . WE HOPE! About September 2d. The Sports Club Summer Picnic will be at Steve Lorenz’s sometime in August. Look for the boxed item regarding the Ladies’ Auxiliary Cook-book. Is life worth living, or is it dull and monotonous? Life is monotonous if it is meaningless; it is not monotonous if it has a purpose. As Stephen Vincent Benet put it: Life is not lost by dying; Life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, In all the thousand small uncaring ways. Become an active member of our fraternal organization, attend your meetings, find out what’s going on. Branch 296 meetings are held the second Sunday of every month, 3 p. m., at the branch home.
