There were card parties nearly every month; the 75th Anniversary Banquet in connection with the National Bowling Tournament in May; the very enjoyable and unusual river cruise-picnic outing and annual Children’s Day all rolled into one festive event; the Diamond Jubilee IBanquet-Dance in September; Ladies’ Auxiliary activities running the gamut of originality; junior and adult bowling programs well on the way; and we find ourselves looking forward to our Christmas holiday get-togethers. The Branch 18 Annual Children’s Christmas Party will be held the second Sunday in December, December 10th to be exact, at the VFW Hall, 1125 Fort Street, corner of .Montie Road, in Lincoln Park, at 3:00 p.m., directly after the branch meeting which will begin at 1:00 p.m. for this date only! There aren’t too many details at present since discussions will be held at the November meeting, but you can be assured that the 1061 Christmas Party will be as much fun as in the past. Watch for local publicity about this affair! The Ladies’ Auxiliary is planning spipe small -surprise -for the mem bers of this hard working group. The Sports Club is also planning a get-together, possibly the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and I’m almost certain our junior bowlers will have their own Christmas Party after bowling one Saturday morning. You see, folks, the idea of affiliated groups within a branch broadens the scope of branch activities! There is something for everyone! There are the branch meetings for the seriousminded and alert membership — fun for the children in bowling activities, dancing classes, parties and picnics — the bowlers are organized to keep abreast of their individual interests, with plenty of social activities to make their goals more interesting — the women members have finally achieved official recognition, and can plan without “male authority” hindering their many fine activities. As I stated, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Try it at your branch! DATES TO REMEMBER: (There will be several activities before this reaches publication, such as the Ladies Auxiliary Card Party on November 5 th, regular Auxiliary ^meeting on November 7th, Branch 18 meeting on November 12th, with Sports Club meeting afterwards at the home of Vice-president Steve Lorenz.) Sunday, December 3rd — Ladies’ Auxiliary Card Party, 8005 W. Jefferson, in Detroit, at 3:00 p.m. Table and door prizes, Hungarian pastries and coffee. Sunday, December 10th — Branch 18 meeting, begins at 1:00 p.m. SHARP. Sunday, December 10th — Annual Children’s Christmas Party, VFW Hall, 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 14th — ANNUAL ELECTION OF BRANCH 18 OFFICERS. We hope there will be a majority of members, representing all affiliated groups. My own personal comment about the extra “Special Prize Fund” for -William- - Penn sponsored bowling teams — VERY FINE IDEA! I’m all for it! This will give our entire William Penn membership the opportunity to participate in the annual William Penn Bowling Tournament, yet encourage more William Penn teams. Again, fine planning by the Fraternal Affairs Division and the Board of Directors — SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Until next month (when my thinking and creativeness will be more exhilarating) . . . Stelkovics, Branch 40 President Valentine Konyha, Jr. Branch 40 Vice President Paul Kovács. We are quite proud of the happy fact that the 75th Anniversary of the William Penn Fraternal Association has been celebrated by many of our branches during this big year for us, and the various branches deserve our commendations for their response to the appeal of the Board of Directors that the branches commemorate locally the Diamond Anniversary of their society. Branch 40, Martins Ferry, Ohio, under the leadership of its new Ladies’ Auxiliary, celebrated the William Penn’s 75th Anniversary with a banquet and dance Saturday evening, October 14, 1961, in the Yorkville Hellenic Hall. Delicious food, an excellent program of entertainment, and the enjoyable music of the Julius Phillips orchestra made the occasion one long to he remembered. The festivities were opened with greetings from the president of Branch 40, Valentine Konyha, Jr., who is also a member of the William Penn Auditing Committee. Mayor John Laslo of Martins Ferry, a member of the branch, was toastmaster. Distinguished guests and speak-Branch 1, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Branch 69, Fairfield, Connecticut, jointly celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the William Penn Fraternal Association at a dinner-dance held on Saturday evening, October 28, 1961, in the United Hall, Bridgeport. Fifty year members of both branches were honored and presented the 50-Year Member Emblems as authorized by the Board of Directors. The program was opened by Branch 1 President Edward Urban who welcomed an estimated 400 members and guests. This was followed by the singing of the American and the Hungarian national anthems by Paul Kurimay, accompanied by the Stibila orchestra. Invocation was said by the Rev. Maurice Lundh. After the dinner Mr. Urban introduced Louis L. Varga, First Vice President of the William Penn Fraternal Association and a Bridgeport resident, and Mr. Varga assumed the role of toastmaster. Guests who were introduced by the toastmaster as speakers of the evening were: Samuel J. Tedesco, Mayor of Bridgeport and member of the William Penn; Julius Macker, President of the William Penn; George W. Ganim, candidate for Mayor of Bridgeport, also a member; Albert J. Stelkovics, William Penn Secretary; and Mrs. Charles ers were Mayor Frank Merkel of Tiltonsville, Ohio, State Representative Wayne L. Hays, State Senator Blake, William Penn President Julius Macker and Secretary of the William Penn Albert J. Stelkovics. The Rev. Arthur Varady, rector of the Hungarian Reformed Church, read the invocation and the benediction. Very sentimental part of the Branch 40 program was the awarding of the 50-Year Member Emblems to Branch 40 members who have been members for fifty or more years. National President Julius Macker congratulated each awardee as he presented this fine gift of the society. Messenger, prominent Bridgeport William Penn member. Presentation of the 50-Year Member Emblems was made by the respective presidents of Branches 1 and 69, Edward Urban and Elmer Somogyi. Out-of-towners and others introduced were: Director and Mrs. Frank Radvany, Trenton, New Jersey; Director Joseph Kormondy, New Brunswick, New Jersey; Director Albert B. Louis Horvath, Publicity Agent of Branch 87, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who was “King” at the William Penn 75th Anniversary Banquet-Dance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 28, 1961. The formalities of the program were concluded when the Rev. Denis Szocs, O.F.M., said the benediction. 50-Year Member Emblem Awardees Left to right, seated: Joseph Suto, Mrs. Frank Juhasz, Mrs. Andrew Mate, Andrew Mate. We repeat that we are gratified in the number of branches which have, commemorated the 75th Anniversary Of our Association. Before the end of the year there will be more such fraternal affairs. It is not too late for any branches which have not yet held 75th Anniversary programs to prepare such affairs while 1961, the 75th Anniversary year, still re.mains, and therefore join in this great fraternal spirit of the branches.
