HORVATH — Cleveland, Ohio s Ul ■■■■■■■■■■ Ui HBJi ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ ■■ ■■■■■■■ We make up this column about the end of the month. For this reason we do not know at this writing how we fared in the general election. The column must be in by a certain deadline which, in this case, makes it necessary to report the political story in December. A happy Thanksgiving Day to all our members. Good health and hearty appetites! We regret to inform our readers of the death of Mrs. Coloman Kolozsvary October 14, 1958. Mrs. Kolozsvary was well-known among the Hungarians in Cleveland and vicinity. She belonged to and headed a number of organizations, always lending her time and prestige to causes of worth. Our condolence to the survivors of this gentle woman. We saw in the death notices that Mike Gyurko, former Sports Club member, departed from among the living. We express our Sympathy to the family. Frank Szabó and his wife were on vacation — BUT — when in New York he developed an infected toe and had to have it treated in a hospital — AND — When in Detroit she suffered a cold so bad that she was in bed for three days. Ill fortune! We saw Steven A. Jakab, lower Buckeye mortician, who looked well after his operation at the Hopkins Clinic in Baltimore. We hurried over to the Branch 14-V meeting Sunday, October 5 and discovered it had finished. We met Daniel Kali who gave the information that the officers had left posthaste to attend the 50th anniversary doing at Branch 108-V, Youngstown. Ohio. A bright future to Branch 108-V. We attended the Sports Club meeting and, among other things decided, was a Christmas party which will be a dinner at the hall on Saturday, December 20. Mrs. Anthony Pinter will be in charge. Mrs. John Horvath, wife of the manager, will cook for the affair. The menu will be worked out by the members. It was suggested that rather than “tap”’ the treasury the members make up a Christmas basket by bringing canned goods, etc. This action would give the members the satisfaction of having made a personal contribution to a good and worthwhile cause. Oscar Federau alleges he lost 25 pounds ... Mrs. Helen O’Ravis told us that her daughter will be on television in the very near future... Why is Frank O’Ravis sporting a “butch” hair cut ? ... Sandy and Mel Hegedűs may go to Florida after the first of the year for a second honeymoon ... John J. Balazs and his wife Catherine have moved, from the old St. Clair Avenue neighborhood to 1457 E. 135th Street, which is East Cleveland, and John is driving a taxicab and working part time at the Weatherhead Company ... Carl Pertz, asserting that there were too many smart alecks, is sorry about the demise of the Friday night league at the William Penn hall... Bertrand Luscik has a distinguished, professor of Harvard look wearing his glasses ... We hear that Joseph Rippner, member who has been sick for sometime and now an amputee, has been hired by county auditor John J. Carney... We saw Mrs. Nagy, mother of recreational commissioner John Nagy, at the Second Ward card party. She is a member of Branch 45-V ... I personally would welcome back to Branch 14-V Joseph Barry, city sewer inspector... The grape vine tells us that William A. Russell may go into the printing business in the area of the Buckeye Road district. A 38 suite apartment will be built on the corner of East 132d and Buckeye, if a law suit is decided in favor of the lot owners, and the place would be opposite Russell Park. A new K. of C. Council is in the making, to be known as the Pope Pius XII Council. Meetings have been held at St. John’s Hall and St. Margaret’s Hall. We sat in on the Saturday luncheon table of Judge Louis Petrash at Hollenden Hotel on October 11. Under discussion were the nationality of conductor George Szell of the Cleveland Orchestra, whether or not Fritz Reiner, visiting conductor, deserved some dubious honors, the lagging of donations promised for the Joseph Reményi Fund, atomic bombs, flourine, and politics. It was an enjoyable gettogether. The “Nite in Budapest” extravaganza, promoted by Jack P. Russell, president of the Cleveland City Council, was a sellout. Almost 600 people attended at $12.50 per head. Honored at this yearly event were actress Ilona Massey and local editor Louis B. Seltzer for their efforts in helping the Hungarian Freedom Fighters in the year 1956. It appears that William Ginter may have a good running start for the council race next year. We saw Robert Lavdis, who ran for state representative, at the Regent Theatre rally. Bailiff William A. Russell has been campaigning hard for Judge Eastman and other judicial candidates. He tells me that he will not disband the Speakers Bureau of 24 people but will use them in the councilmanic and mayoralty campaigns next year. The, Moreland Theatre rally was attended by 1,500 people under the auspices of the Cuyahoga County Hungarian Club. Two prominent William Penn members, Senator Frank J. Lausche and Mayor Anthony J. Celebrezze, participated. William A. Russell is president of the club. The role of master of ceremonies was handled by Andy Dono, president of the United Hungarian Societies. We saw Joseph Krupansky, State Representative Frank R. Pokorny, Jr., Steve Szalay, real estate man, Julius Koszey, Frank J. Pokorny, Sr., Judge Joseph Stearns, Judge Louis Petrash, Senator Julius J. Petrash, William Ginter, Bob Lavdis, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Balaszik, Mrs. Irene Kleppel, Frank Szappanos, radio and recording man, singer Jóska Rabb, Margaret Altman Singer, Joseph Leso, president of the 29th Ward Democratic Club, Steve Gaspar. This meeting was considered one of the best and the largest. The West Side Cleveland Hungarian Democratic League’s testimonial dinner for Congressman Michael Feighan of the Ohio 20th Congressional District was a huge success. Emery Keszie, toastmaster, handled every detail with the finesse of an artist. Some members of Branch 45-V were present: Joseph Barry, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Drotos, District Manager Coloman R. Bertalan, Rudolph Bresnay, Mrs. Keszie, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Stefan and their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ágoston, Mrs. Irene Kleppel, Senator Petrash, Joseph Kadar, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bodnar, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Krupansky. In closing, we should like to thank each and every voter in Cuyahoga County, Ohio for his support. Ex animo, JOSEPH J. LOUIS HORVATH, Publicity Man-------------------------Pleasant Visit Joseph Szalay, for years vice president and director of the former Verhovay, also past president of Branch 14-V, Cleveland, Ohio, was recently the guest of his son Joseph and daughter-in-law at their home, 266 Westgate Road, Buffalo, New York. Mr. Szalay is shown with his granddaughters, Doris Mae, left, a graduate of Kenmore Senior High School and Jeanette, right. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Szalay. Both girls are members of Branch 383-V, Buffalo, New York. Always the William Penn fraternalist wherever he is, Mr. Szalay visited our Buffalo district office and had fine comments on its modern aspects. T
