July 16, 1958 PAGE 11 William Penn MOTOR CITY NEWS BRANCH 18-V — DETROIT, MICHIGAN (Formerly Branches 36-V and 443-V) By Jolán Lucas SORRY — SPACE AT A PREMIUM! The first meeting of Detroit William Penn Sports Club enthusiasts met on Friday evening, June 20, 1958 at the Lucas residence. Present to give friendly advice and encouragement were Field Manager Elmer Charles, Field Supervisor Gabriel Nameth and District Managers Stephen Lukacs and Stephen Úsztok. The meeting was small due to the wildness of Tigertown fans and team who whipped the New York Yankees in a crucial game. However enough good work was begun to be extremely encouraging. The Charter Committee is composed of Olga Boldizsár (and her clan), Mary Bardocz of Branch 500-V, George Toth (who has several other members), George Marton, Gloria Bolla, and the Lucas clan. Absent, but definitely interested, were Andy and Julia Konkoly who had to work, Marie Gallovich who was on her California vacation, Joe Lorincz and his buddies (Joe works at Briggs Stadium when the Detroit Tigers are in town), and Elvira László who had a last minute engagemnt. After a friendly talk and a lively discussion period, Field Manager Charles informed the group that the charter would have to be discussed at least thrice before it is put to a final vote. Mr. Charles also told the group that this was the liveliest and most interesting meeting of William Penn members in the Detroit area and that we were on the right track. Perserverance, hard work and continued enthusiasm should make the Detroit William Penn Sports Club a shining example to the rest of the Association. Next meeting was to be held after the regular Branch 18-V IN SERVICE Private Andrew Thomas Toth has been in the Army since February 3, 1958. He underwent basic training at Fort Carlson, Colorado, received a furlough in April, and is now a member of the Military Police at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He is a graduate of North High School and attended the University of Omaha before joining the Armed Forces. Private Toth is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Toth of Omaha, Nebraska. He is a member of Branch 278-V, Omaha, of which branch his father is vice president. monthly meeting on Sunday, July 13 at 4 p. m. We thank the William Penn officers who took time out from their busy schedules to ericourage a small band of sportsmen to organize a new way of William Penn Fraternal life in the Detroit metropolitan area. Those of us who had participated in previous National William Penn Tournaments were enlightened with respect to the many heavy responsibilitiesv which fall on the shoulders of the Tournament Administrator and his two committees. We all feel better about this highy interesting inside information, and at least some of us in the metropolitan area will not be quite as demanding at future tournaments. Thanks again Mr. Charles. * %. * WILLIAM PENN JUNIOR CLUB NEWS: The Junior Club will resume activities on a more varied basis beginning in September. Many new projects will be started. A definite meeting place has been found. Please call Julia Danko or Helen and Geza Madarasz for further information. Any mother and father sincerely interested in acquainting their children with fellow William Penn members will offer their help — whether as counselors, donation of sports and handicraft equipment ,or financially. Please try to become interested in your children’s welfare through a fraternal group — the WILLIAM PENN JUNIOR CLUB. ^ * FURTHER TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: Since the June issue of the Motor City News column was chopped almost to obliteration, there is no sense in re-writing the lost paragraphs. Be advised, however, that the many people who offered their suggestions to better the future bowling tournaments will find that these suggestions will be taken under advisement by the Tournament Committee which will meet in September during the Board of Directors meeting. An official letter will go to the Tournament Committee listing all the suggestions and criticisms, particulary the importance of tournament bowling pins as suggested by Paul Sutch, team captain frttm Branch 20 V in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Paul is the secretary-treasurer of the Painesville-Willoughby Bowling Association in the State of Ohio, Counties of Lake and Geauga, representing 900 bowling teams in that area. Be advised further that it was a good column and had much of the information requested by the many members to whom I talked. Space being at a premium in the WILLIAM PENN official organ, it will take months to get all of your ideas across to the readers. However, please feel free to write to me. Your ideas, criticisms and constructive suggestions will be presented to the proper department heads in the Home office. Thanks to all of you for your trust in me. * >(. * This should about make it for a two column spread. Little dribbles of news will reach you from time to time, but it occurs to me that we should start a local news letter for Detroit area readers. If the Detroit district office would have a mimeograph and an addressograph, it wouldn’t be at THE BRIDGEPORT REPORT We do not have a regular reporter at our branch, which will help explain tó many members in this area why this column does not appear regularly. If any member would like this position kindly attend the meetings and the branch would be that much richer. Speaking of being richer, I must say that Parent R will hereafter (July 1st to be exact) meet at the Eastern District Office, the first Tuesday of every month at 8 P. M. Now what will make us richer will be that the high rent and costs of being at the West End will cease. The savings for the branch will be more than $1,500 a year, which coupled with what money is in the treasury will amount to a tidy sum at the end of a year. Next month we will strive to give the exact amount of money in the savings bank for all the members to see. The branch has taken on the appearance of being one of the most active in the entire association. Quite a few people have calle'd the local office to express their surprise and joy at knowing that a team in the Black Rock Little League is being sponsored by Parent-R. It is, by the way, leading the league in all departments. Last week one of our games was described over the local radio station. Parent-R Officers will hold their annual picnic at 90 Acres Park on July 20, from ten A. M. till dark. They extend their welcome to all members. Please call the office for more information. We are planning a busload for the New York City branch picnic on July 27th. Anyone wishing to go, kindly call ED. 6-1188. Elaborate plans are being made for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Rákóczi Aid Association. It will be held in the fall when almost all our members will be back from vacation. Any money derived from the above named activity will, of course, be applied toward the building fund and Christmas party for the children. Last year more children came than we had planned for. This year the committee will notify, if possible, all members two months prior to Christmas so that no child will go without a present. We understand the Philadelphia bowling tournament was a huge success. Congratulations to the winners and to all who made the event possible. Bridgeport will be there next year. We will win as we never undertake anything with defeat in mind. Because of the lack of interest of members who have paid their dues on Tuesday nights in the West End (the acceptance of dues money at a late hour is very dangerous indeed), effective as of July 1958, there will be no more Tuesday night collection. Until further notice, the Sunday collection will be accepted between 11 A. M. and IP. M. From beautiful Connecticut we wish one and all a very happy summer and a sincere wish that, if you visit here, do stop in. Fraternally, ANDREW R. BALOGH District Manager ALLIANCE SPEAKS BRANCH 189-V ALLIANCE, OHIO _______________________________________________ Hello again from Alliance’s own Branch 189-V. Congratulations are due the officers and directors of our branch for the excellent job they have done on improving our club rooms. The bar-room looks elegant and everyone marvels at all the space we have now. Incidentally, the women too now have a modern up-to-date “powder-room.” Everyone is pleased over all the changes. President John Barany invites everyone of you to come see the “new look” and especially urges attendance at the regular branch meetings. He and his fellow-officers and directors all pitched in on the remodeling, so come out to see how nice everything looks. Newlyweds Louis Francis and Olive Bardo are honey-mooning in Denver, Colorado. We wish them much happiness. Dr. William (Bill) Buzogány is ending a three-week vacation spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Buzogány. Mike is a very ardent member of our Association and one of its staunchest pillars. He and Irene are quite modest in praising their new Doctor-son. Branch 189-V and all Alliance salute this brilliant young man. Bill has just graduated from Strong Memorial Hospital, a part of the University of Rochester, and will intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in all too difficult to inform you of all local news. So long, now, and try to keep cool this summer! Your old FERRET 12996 Rosedale Avenue Wyandotte, Michigan AVenue 3-0905 Chicago, Illinois. Bill attended Mount Union College here in Alliance where he was graduated with honors. While at Mount Union. College h^ found time to participate actively in dramatics. He was also a member of Sigma Mu Phe Sigma, a Biology honorary; Psi Kappa Omega, a Scholastic honorary; and Mu Delta Tau, an organization for furthering interest in medicine. This handsome young man is certainly a credit to his parents. Good Luck to you, Dr. Buzogány. Little Bruce Buzogány, another son of Mike and Irene, is convalescing nicely following surgery at Akron’s Children’s Hospital. Still another Buzogány to make the news is daughter Ethel Francis. Ethel and her husband John recently adopted a beautiful baby boy. The baby, 8 months old now, is named William Louis. John and Ethel are very happy with this new addition to their family. Mrs. John Korosy, Sr. was pleasantly surprised on her birthday last week when her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren all gathered to celebrate this happy occasion. The house was “over-flowing!” "Mom” Korosy, as she is fondly known, received many gifts, but the best tribute was the “kids” peeking into the oven to see what Gram had cooked that day. They weren’t disappointed either — palacsinta no less and good Hungarian — Cabbage soup — MmmU Alliance bowlers came home from the tournament tired but happy. Everyone had a pleasant time. It’s the same old story when you ask, “How was the tournament?” “ The best one yet!” ALLIANCE HAS SPOKEN!
