DEATH TAKES LOUIS NOVAK A long-time Pittsburgh area resident of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, Louis.Novak, veteran William Penn member and former branch officer, died May 20, 1958. Just the month before, on April 27, Mr. Novak was among the honored veteran members of Branch 226-V who were presented the Illustrious Citation and Gold Emblem at the very highly successful banquet and dance of the McKeesport branch, and he was in one of the five pictures published with the story of the affair. Life denied Mr. Novak the advantages and prestige of a long formal education and before his retirement he earned his living as a coal miner, but nature endowed this man with gentlemanly and scholarly qualities. He was known as a calligrapher because of his beautiful and elegant handwriting, he wrote well and composed poetry with depth, and his paintings evoked admiration. Beyond these talents he was impeccably honest and sincere and he was an old-line fraternalist who worked for love of society rather than monetary reward. His profound sentiment expressed itself at the Branch 226-V affair when, reading a Hungarian poem which tells of why a Hungarian should be proud of his Magyar heritage, he could not finish because of tears obscuring the vision of his eyes and because his failing health could not stand the strain of the emotional recitation. Louis Novak was born March 23, 1884 in Borsodszirák, county of Borsod, Hungary. He came to America in 1910. In the same year he joined Branch 30, Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. For years he was secretary and then manager of this branch until its merger with McKeesport, Pennsylvania Branch 226-V. The then Verhovay Aid Association was noting the abilities of fraternalist Novak and in time called upon his services in various Association offices — as Alternate Member of the Council of Appeals, Member of the Board of Directors, Vice President, and Member of the Auditing Committee. Left a widower years ago, Mr. Novak reared his eight children admirably well, two of them living with him at the time of his death. Services were held at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Thomas M. Gearing celebrating Requiem High Mass. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Elizabeth. Officially representing the William Penn Fraternal Association at the obsequies were National President Coloman Re vesz and National Secretary Albert J. Stelkovics. The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Chortes of Elizabeth, Mrs. Mary Kotto of Clairton, Miss Emma Novak at home, and Mrs. Margaret Manning of Lincoln Park, Michigan; four sons, Stephen J., George and Louis J. Novak, all of Elizabeth, and Ernest Novak at home; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two brothers and a sister in Europe. FAREWELL, LOUIS NOVAK.
